If a city building game would go on sale on Steam I would so buy one....all this Sim City talk has me craving some actual city building.

I have that, its pretty limited though.  Still a good game.

Bob has been playing RPG Maker VX Ace lately (lucky bastard, game runs 170 green backs).  So i've been playing some home made RPGs lol

Yeah, I've really been digging RPG Maker lately.  I played around with it a few years ago and didn't have the patience to figure out the scripting, but I've played lots of games other people have made with it.

I've finally got the scripting figured out.  It takes a little while, but the VX Ace version is a hell of a lot easier to learn than RPG Maker 2000 or XP.

For what it's worth, the only thing you really need is the software itself.  The DLC isn't worth the price, considering you can get plenty of free (and much better) content from the Internet.  Lots of artists allow free use of their tiles, character images, etc. for non-commercial purposes.  I'd be happy to hook you up with the content I've collected if you decide to pick up the software.

I've even convinced Meredith to make a few sprites and graphics for me!

I'm just screwing around at the moment, playing with the scripting system.

I haven't really developed a plot, but I'm working on the premise of a world in which magic is incredibly powerful but has a side-effect of poisoning the caster.  The script I'm working on tracks magic usage as a variable and increments that variable whenever a spell is cast.  The "poison" bleeds off slowly over time, and different spells increase it by varying amounts.  I've created a handful of status conditions that kick in at various points, ultimately consummating in the death of the character at a certain point.

Really, it's just an excuse to play with RPG Maker and learn the Ruby programming language.   Smiley

RPG Maker has always caught my eye, but it rarely goes on sale, and even the base package is 70 dollars.  I've always been afraid I'd buy it and not like it...wasting a lot of money haha

It's only been on Steam for a few weeks and they already put it on sale once, so I have high hopes they'll continue to discount it from time to time.  I've never seen the RPG Maker website put the game on sale, though, so this is a step in the right direction.

Yea it was half off in the Christmas sale. My friend at work who is a designer and already familiar with all sorts of game scripting, has already made a functional rpg based on Lord of the Flies. The program seems neat. Would be cool to make some assets for it.

It's still a work in progress, but it's definitely playable for several game days.  I have played an early build and liked it a lot. It has a nice jrpg feel to it (Which is easy to do in that program i hear) He's got all sorts of plans for it, but he also has got a lot on his plate with other projects.

I bet.  If he ever publishes it, let me know, I'm always up for out-of-the-ordinary games.

He might be ok with another person testing it out, especially one in love with rpg's as much as yourself. I'll ask him.  He is only using the placeholder art for now, but he is also an artist, so he will replace all of it with his own style soon.

You'll have to show me what you got at the next lan.

It really amazes me to see what talented artists can do with RPG Maker.  There are a couple of titles out there that look like they were made completely from scratch.  Here's the next one on my game list:

RPG Maker always makes me lament my complete dearth of artistic ability.  I need to get a relatively modern copy of Photoshop and see if I can manipulate some existing public domain sprites.  It's better than nothing, I guess!
