I've been playing an oldie but goody the last few days. I bought Sid Meier's Pirates on Steam for $10.00 and have sunk several solid hours of gaming into it. I'm really surprised that the 2004 title received so little press attention (or maybe I just missed it). It's a fairly complex game with bits and pieces of several genres rolled into one fat package. You get to build your own fleet, build up your crew, hire specialists, and purchase improvements for your ships. You can represent one or more of the four kingdoms (Spanish, English, French, and the Freaky Deaky Dutch) and attack their enemies, progressing through various ranks with each country. As you progress through ranks, you gain benefits at home ports and receive entitlements of land from the King.
You also have to contend with pirates, indians, and religious entities. You can invade cities with your pirate crews and ransack them for gold, and slowly build your own empire if that's your gig. There are other pirate leaders on the sea, though, and once you gain enough recognition you'll be sure to catch their attention.
All in all, it's well worth $10 and I'd highly recommend grabbing a copy if you're up for something non-traditional. You can only play so many FPS/RTS/RPG rehashes before you need something a little different!
So what are you bums playing these days? Hopefully something other than WoW has captured your collective attention?

Online task force: Adults shouldn't play Animal Crossing
An online Missouri task force has suggested that adults who play Animal Crossing should be viewed with suspicion, as they are likely up to no good.
One of the great things about the majority of Nintendo developed games is that they appeal to such a wide variety of gamers. Take Animal Crossing, for instance. While it is suitable for younger and casual gamers thanks to its adorable characters and setting, more than one so-called hardcore gamer has lost plenty of hours trying to pay off the nefarious Tom Nook. However, in spite of this, the Mid-Missouri Internet Crimes Task Force believes that AC is not a game that should be played by adults.
"There is no reason an adult should have this game," Andy Anderson told ABC News, via GamePolitics. Anderson believes that any adults playing Animal Crossing: City Folk on the Wii are most likely doing it for the wrong reasons, suggesting that the majority of these adult gamers are actually child predators.
It's a curious decision to select AC:CF as an example of a dangerous online game, especially considering the limited online interactions players can have, something that is aided by the use of Nintendo's infamous friend code system. While parents should most certainly be aware of what their children are doing online, to suggest that this means that adults can't enjoy specific forms of entertainment is ludicrous.
I suppose I should tell Meredith to go down to the police station and register herself as an "offender." What a bunch of nonsense. Sure, it isn't my type of game, but to say imply that an adult that plays Animal Crossing is some sort of child predator is unabashedly absurd.
The best part of this whole thing? The only way an Animal Crossing player can interact with another player is if they swap Wii codes. In other words, for a predator to stalk a child in Animal Crossing, he would first have to contact them in some other way (i.e. chat forum, instant messaging, etc.) and ask for their code. If they can already contact the child in some other fashion, this is really just a moot point.

Rockstar announces Max Payne 3
Rockstar has announced that Max Payne 3 is officially in development at Rockstar Vancouver, and should be released later this year.
Not long after announcing a sequel to Red Dead Revolver, Rockstar has revealed that it is working on the third entry in the Max Payne franchise. The game is currently in development at the company's Vancouver studio and is expected to be released later this year.
"We're starting a new chapter of Max's life with this game," Rockstar's Sam Houser said. "This is Max as we've never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation."
Virtually no details have been released about the game, but it will have players take on the role of a retired Max in a much more violent and darker version of New York City. The first image of the game (below) is a piece of concept art that shows off a grizzled Max splattered with blood.
With Rockstar's history, we most likely won't see much more information until we're closer to the game's actual release. Max Payne 3 is going to be released next winter for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
