My new PC
Jun 25th, 2008 at 1:11pm

I'm building a rig and all my parts should be to my place by the time I get home.  Its my first build and my total cost without monitor is roughly $1,150.  Yea, its cheaper than I had expected and I think I made a few bad choices with some of the parts, but here is the list.

Intel E8400 @ 3.0 Ghz (I will probably overclock)
ASUS P5Q pro  (I wish I would have chosen a nvidia 790i board)
nvidia 9800 GTX
2GB GSkill DDR2 800 (ram too slow? might get more/faster ram later)
500GB WD HDD
LiteOn DVD RW (will get a blue ray drive soon)
Coolermaster Cosmos (Black)
Zalman 92mm CPU heatsink

My monitor.......  Shocked
28" LCD Hanns-G on sale for $489 with free shipping.

Looks good to me.  Let me know if you do change out the ram and notice a change...

Also, which case did you choose?  *crosses fingers for hello kitty case*

Holy compensation batman!  28'' monitor.

Has anyone cracked Blu-Ray encryption yet?  I haven't been wanting to make the transfer anytime in my lifetime so I wouldn't know but was curious.

28"?!  For the love of all that is holy!

I'd make a joke about you compensating for something, but I'm really sorta jealous.

Your system looks pretty nice.  You'll have to let us know how the 9800GTX works out.  I've been drooling over the new GTX 280's, but I don't have $650 to drop on a freaking video card.  My 8800 GTS 512 is still holding out quite nicely, but I'll probably buy another video card closer to Christmas.

This just in..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0e18EJrUSE
It has a biometric power button.  No physical parts move to turn the case on, you just tap a certain area and the system turns on!

Hopefully, it is slightly less annoying than the power/reset/eject buttons on the PS3.  I hate those things.

Traditional "clicky" power buttons have worked just fine for decades.  I don't need this biometric BS!

What do you guys think about this..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220342

I could fit my OS and my frequently used applications on this and it'd be crazy fast.

I priced a few hard drives on newegg.  It's roughly 11 cents a gigabyte for most drives.  For solid state your paying 30 cents.  Sure it's good to use to house a operating system, but to make a RAID array of it, I'm not sure about that.

Actually, I was looking into buying one for my OS to reside on, but the reviews on most solid state drives SUCK.  They have poor life expectancy (which makes no sense to me) and poor write speeds (which also makes no sense to me).  Most of the cheap drives in the sub-$400 range are pure crap because they use crappy MLC memory.

The higher-end drives with SLC memory are excellent, but I'm not shelling out $700 for 64GB of storage.  I could buy a 15,000 RPM SCSI drive for that price.

The only market I see for these MLC drives at this point is for laptops and tablets.  Heat is virtually non-existent, they don't make any noise, and they use far less power.  Until vendors can offer superior memory at a lower price point, these things just aren't worth it to me.
