US papers say death saved Pinochet from prosecution
2 hours, 20 minutes ago
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US newspapers said in editorials that the death of former Chilean dictator
Augusto Pinochet likely helped him escape prosecution for thousands of deaths and disapperances during his rule.
The former strongman, who evaded years of efforts to bring him to justice in hundreds of cases arising from his 1973-1990 regime, died in Santiago's Military Hospital Sunday, a week after suffering a heart attack.
"At the time of his death, he was under indictment for kidnapping, torture and murder, as well as corruption-related charges of tax evasion and possession of false passports," The New York Times said in an editorial. "Time has revealed that the once-admired General Pinochet was accomplished only at holding power."
Meanwhile, USA Today noted that the difference between Iraqi dictator
Saddam Hussein and Pinochet emerged Sunday when Pinochet died after suffering a heart attack at age 91.
"Bringing a dictator to justice is about more than revenge," the paper said. "It is needed for a society to face up to past crimes and to deter brutal dictators elsewhere ... Those now involved in crimes against humanity -- the leaders of Sudan, abetting genocide in the country's western Darfur province spring to mind -- must expect to end up like Saddam, not Pinochet."
First of all...I would like to remind us that we, the US govt, put this butcher in power! Second of all this story is BS! We've had what? Some 30 years to prosecute this tyrant on evidence more convincing than anything we had on Iraq...including the gassing of the Kurds!
Complete...complete white wash!

H.S. Halts Publication of Honor Roll
Needham High Cites Stress On Students As Major Reason
By Jim Boyd
Special Correspondent
POSTED: 1:14 pm EST December 11, 2006

NEEDHAM, Mass. -- Needham High School has abandoned its long-standing practice of publishing the names of students who make the honor roll in the local newspaper.
Principal Paul Richards said a key reason for stopping the practice is its contribution to students' stress level in "This high expectations-high-achievement culture."
The proposal to stop publishing the honor roll came from a parent. Richards took the issue before the school council, which approved it. Parents were notified of the decision last month. Richards said he received about 60 responses from both parents and students and the feedback has been evenly split for and against.
Richards said one parent with three children attending Needham High told him publishing the honor roll is a constant cause of stress in her family. According to that parent, one of the three students routinely made the honor roll while the other two did not.
Another parent who didn't want his name used said his two youngsters, a senior and a junior at Needham High, both consistently received honors and high honors. He said he, "took special pride in opening the newspaper and seeing his kids names." He said he could also see how the publishing of names could put stress on other kids who did not make it.
Richards said publishing of the honor roll represented "an unhealthy focus on grades." He pointed out that there are lots of other ways that students achieve, such as in clubs, musicals, concerts, athletics and community service.
He said the ranking of students solely based on grades goes against the school's overall mission which is to "promote learning."
The decision to drop publishing the honor roll comes at a time when the Needham High community is dealing with heartache. Last month, two seniors were killed in a car crash. Last spring, a Needham High student committed suicide.
The Needham Times has traditionally published the school's honor roll. Editor-in-Chief Greg Reibman said the paper has "always been interested in recognizing the achievements of all Needham students -- not just in academics but in sports, the arts, community service, and in any other way."
"We understand that the school is trying hard to deal with some enormous challenges. I don't think anyone believes this alone is going to solve some of these very tough issues, but we respect the decision of the experts who certainly have the students' best interests in mind," Reibman said.
Needham High's principal said the decision to no longer publish the honor roll is not nailed in cement. Richards said it is "subject to review." He said, "We'll go through this year without it and assess the impact on the school culture."
So if we're not pushing others or even the ones getting the good grades...what do we want people to achieve? This is what happens when the parents let the schools have more power than they do. Others not measuring up? LOWER THE STANDARDS! In the real world...or at least it was in mine...if I got bad grades...I wouldn't be able to sit down in class and that would make me do better.
Also...how many youths read the paper? I bet you not a one of them are the people on that list. How many kids "feel bad" and are so mortified that they tremble in the corner on the basement with a blanket over their head sucking their thumb rocking back and forth saying "I'm not on the list....I'm not of the list....I'm not on the list". Shoot I hope people not on the list do cry and feel bad. In fact I would hold a parade every month that would be mandatory to attend and march these kids down the street with dunce caps if that got them to do better. But no...we'll just give everyone a "participation trophy" and everyone will feel good about themselves. Remember children it's not how well you do in life that matters...it only matters that you're at least breathing. No Jonny, the person who grows up and helps poor people is not as successful as the 780lb guy who can't roll over. They are both number 1...in frackin participation.

Ok first of all...no one should care about this nor should it make CNN news.
However she says that it's no ones business but she offers up that she came out of an AA meeting! It must be the cool new thing for these hip young celebs to do! Drink until stupid then go to AA. Soon our children will do likewise.
The main problem is the following:
Quote:
"I haven't had a drink in seven days. Or anything," she says. "I'm not even legal to, so why would I? I don't drink when I go to clubs. I drink with my friends at home, but there's no need to. I feel better not drinking. It's more fun. I have Red Bull."
She asks why she would drink because she's not legal yet. Then she admit to drinking at friends home. Uhh what?
"Why would I drink? That's stupid. I mean I drink but that's only when I'm drinking. Drinking is different when you're not at clubs...where I don't drink. Cause once I'm at a friends house drinking is not really drinking...which I don't do. It's none of your business!"
And she feels better for not drinking? I don't think you can claim to have this life altering experience if you've only not drank in 7 days. It sounds like you've wasted 348 days in AA if you've only not drank for 7 freaken days!

I just wrote an ethics final on celebrity news and the boundaries of privacy. I also addressed coverage of Lindsay, Paris and Britney, discussing how it may link to mysogyny and definitely gives girls poor role models. It's also a part of the link as to why this generation is a step backwards in the feminist movement. There's awareness, and then there's apathy. It's awful.
Although I don't know how "bad" Lindsay's drinking became, I know (and am pretty sure some of you guys know) that drinking is just a part of the age regardless of law. College kind of does that to you, unless you're adamant about not drinking.
You know, it sounds more retarted when I wrote that out.

Mass. smokers sue Philip Morris on cancer checks
2 hours, 20 minutes ago
BOSTON (Reuters) - A group of heavy Marlboro smokers have filed a lawsuit in federal court in Boston, asking Philip Morris USA to pay for screenings that may detect the early stages of lung cancer, court documents showed on Friday.
The class-action lawsuit, which was filed on behalf of current and former Marlboro smokers over 50 years old who smoked a pack or more a day for 20 years, demands the tobacco company pay for an annual low-dose X-ray scan of the chest.
It is modeled on a similar lawsuit filed in Federal District Court in Brooklyn in January. Both suits are unlike typical tobacco-related litigation that has sought billions of dollars in punitive damages from cigarette companies.
Attorneys with Thornton & Naumes, who filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Boston on Thursday, said as many as 80,000 at-risk Massachusetts residents may become part of the class in the lawsuit.
"Simply stated, this surveillance if made available will save the lives and ease the suffering of a significant number of the members of the proposed class," the lawsuit said.
Lisa Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for Altria Group Inc., the parent of Philip Morris, said the company had seen the lawsuit, but added that juries in two other cases in which smokers sought payment for "medical monitoring" ruled in favor of the tobacco company.
"Smokers' medical monitoring class actions have been consistently rejected by the overwhelming majority of trial and appellate courts since the first one was filed in 1994," Gonzalez said.
Lung cancer kills more people by far than any other type of cancer. It is caused mostly by smoking but also by exposure to smoke, radioactive substances, asbestos and a few other substances. Lung cancer is diagnosed in 173,000 Americans yearly and kills 164,000. It kills 1.3 million a year globally.
The case follows a study published in The
New England Journal of Medicine in October that suggests annual computed tomography (CT) scans can catch lung cancer when it is still curable.
CT scans are special X-rays and a low-dose scan is used to minimize the risk that the procedure itself could cause cancer. Thornton & Naumes said low-dose CT scans cost about $500 each and are not usually covered by health insurance.
As in the New York case, the Massachusetts plaintiffs are not seeking compensatory or punitive damages. Attorneys Levy Philips & Konigsberg, which filed the New York lawsuit, are also counsel in the Massachusetts case.
Smokers want Philip Morris to pay for cancer screens? How about smokers open their eyes and read the warning label on the side of their 12 packs a day they smoke?! These douche bags who are suing are the morons we all know and hate. What's that smoking causes cancer? Wha...wha...what?! Well at least I can use my Big Mac as an artificial heart transplant! If I were the judge I would award these clowns something alright. I would have the surgeon general and the CEOs of PM to line up and kick these people in the crotch (or respective female areas) for waisting our time and not dying sooner to save us a headache from listening to them complaining about "woe is me! I have cancer and didn't know!"
Bugger off.

Louisiana casino gamblers lose $199.7 million
By ALAN SAYRE
Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS — The post-hurricane gambling boom in Louisiana more or less came to a stop in November as gamblers lost $199.7 million in state-licensed casinos.
The figure was up from $184.4 million in November 2005, but that included a time when Harrah's New Orleans Casino was shuttered because of Hurricane Katrina. Harrah's provided $32.6 million of the overall take last month, state police reported today.
Although last winter and spring provided the biggest numbers ever seen in Louisiana's state-licensed casinos, the take has moved back to historically lower levels as casinos have begun reopening in Biloxi, Miss. — all of which had been wiped out by Katrina.
The biggest drop-off was noted by the state's 12 operating riverboat casinos. Those gambling halls won $157.4 million in November 2005, a figure that dropped to $138.3 million last month. The three slot machine casinos at race tracks won $28.7 million last month, a slight increase from $27 million in November 2005.
The Shreveport-Bossier City market, which has five riverboats and a slot casino at Louisiana Downs, won $65.4 million from gamblers in November, compared to the year-ago figure of $62.4 million.
The New Orleans market, consisting of Harrah's and two riverboat casinos, won $55.2 million in November, up from $36.9 million in November 2005 — sans Harrah's downtown casino.
The Lake Charles market, which has three riverboat casinos and a slot casino at Delta Downs, took in $51.8 million last month, compared with $50.8 million in November 2005.
The Baton Rouge market, which has two riverboat casinos, won $18.9 million in November, compared to the year-ago figure $24.9 million — a time when Baton Rouge was packed with hurricane refugees.
The other state-licensed casino, the slot machine gambling hall at Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, took in $8.3 million last month, up from $7.7 million in November 2005.
The figures do not include the state's three Indian reservation casinos, which are not required to report their revenue figures publicly.
Have fun with that.

Honorable Samuel Bodman
Secretary of Energy
Department of Energy
1000 Independence Ave., SW
Washington, DC 20585
Via Facsimile: (202) 586-4403
Dear Secretary Bodman:
In November 2006, the Project On Government Oversight received the attached anonymous letter from a number of workers at the Pantex Plant outside Amarillo, Texas. The letter raised some very serious safety concerns at Pantex. POGO has been able to confirm a number of the problems raised in the letter, including that there is widespread fatigue and overworking of production technicians who work on the warheads. As you know, safety at Pantex is paramount in the nuclear weapons complex because it is responsible for assembling and disassembling nuclear weapons.
According to the August 2006 “Pantex Plant Weekly Report” from the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, “PTs [production technicians] work 72 hour weeks (6 days, 12 hours).” POGO has been told by sources that 80 hours per week is not unusual. As you know, this is already a high stress working environment dealing with high explosives and full up, or fully assembled, nuclear weapons. The excessive work hours are resulting from pressure by Pantex operator BWXT and the National Nuclear Security Administration to meet unrealistic production goals given the size of the workforce. In 2007, the disassembly production goals will increase by 50%. This is a recipe for disaster. One senior nuclear scientist said that he “would not work on his car engine if he were fatigued from a 72-hour work week, and sure as hell would not work on a nuclear weapon.”
Pantex has had serious safety problems spanning back at least several years. For example, in 2004, while a W56 warhead – which, at 1200 kilotons (or 100 times the yield of a Hiroshima bomb), is one of the largest missile-launched warheads in our stockpile – was being disassembled, a crack was discovered in the high explosive (HE). Technicians used the equivalent of duct tape to hold the cracked high explosive together. The next year, Pantex paid a $124,000 fine for safety violations related to the HE cracking incident.
Now we have learned that in March 2005, there was a “near-miss” event while disassembling another W56 warhead. Apparently the production technicians were using a faulty tool, putting too much pressure on the warhead. On November 29, 2006, Pantex was only fined $110,000 – 18 months after the near-miss incident. What was not made public at the time the fine was levied, however, is that according to safety experts knowledgeable about this event, it could actually have resulted in the detonation of the warhead. This incident was particularly dangerous because the W56 warhead was deployed in 1965, pre-dating the three basic enhanced safety features which reduce the possibility of an accidental detonation that are now required on more modern weapons. There are still several older warheads slated for dismantlement that do not include these enhanced features.
Both fines are chump change for BWXT, which makes as much as $30 million annually in award fees and incentives for operating Pantex alone, after its costs are covered. These ridiculously-low fines provide absolutely no deterrent for the sloppy safety procedures of BWXT.
While the older and more unstable nuclear warheads continue to be handled at Pantex, it is clearly of the utmost importance that DOE hold the contractor equally accountable for safety as for production schedules. By cutting corners, BWXT is unnecessarily endangering the workforce, and indeed the entire Texas panhandle.
We urge the Department of Energy to consider a deep cut in the award and incentive fees so that BWXT will take these safety problems seriously.
POGO certainly applauds the acceleration of dismantling weapons in accordance with international treaties. In fact, we believe these efforts should be the highest priority for the nuclear weapons complex given the benefits dismantlement bring in cost savings and improved safety and security. As a result, additional production technicians should be hired immediately in order to bring the average work week to a more reasonable and safe level while meeting these goals. Finally, aggressive steps need to be taken to change the culture at Pantex so that workers feel free to express concerns about their work environment.
We understand that DOE and BWXT are in the midst of an investigation into these issues. We are requesting unclassified copies of these reports as soon as they are complete. If you have any questions, please contact me at (202) 347-1122.
Sincerely,
Danielle Brian

The island blown up by a gas cooker
by PAUL THOMPSON
Last updated at 22:00pm on 28th December 2006
This was the astonishing scene after a faulty gas cooker exploded in a timber-framed shack - and devastated a tiny Caribbean island.
The blast caused an inferno that leapt from hut to hut, taking less than ten minutes to sweep across half the shanty town-style community.
As gas cylinders in more wooden homes exploded, many of Soledad Miria's 1,014 inhabitants dived into the sea or took to fishing boats to escape.
More than a third - 348 - were injured but, amazingly, no one died. By the time firefighting helicopters had put out the blaze on the 800-yard-wide island off Panama's northern coast, around 50 huts, a school and a community centre had been flattened.
Officials said a faulty connection between the cooker and a gas canister led to a build-up of fumes which exploded when a resident switched the appliance on to cook a meal.

Spelling mistake takes tourist 13,000km off-course
Sidney, Montana not Sydney, Australia
By John Leyden
Published Monday 1st January 2007 14:41 GMT
A typing mistake on an online booking form left a German tourist 13,000km off-course on a journey to meet his girlfriend.
Tobi Gutt left Germany in high hopes on Saturday, dressed in T-shirt and shorts for the Australian summer, but instead of heading towards Sydney, Australia the 21 year-old ended up en-route to Sidney, Montana. Initially Gutt reasoned that it was possible to fly to Australia via the United States and it was only as he boarded a commuter flight to Sidney, an oil town that's home to around 5,000 people, that the terrible truth dawned on him. Up to that point he'd flown to Portland, Oregon and on to Billings, Montana with mounting concern.
"I did wonder but I didn't want to say anything," Gutt told the German newspaper Bild. "I thought to myself, you can fly to Australia via the United States."
He was left in the stuck middle of nowhere with only a thin jacket to keep out the cold. Fortunately after three days his family and friends were able to send him the €600 he needed to book a new ticket to Australia. "I didn't notice the mistake as my son is usually good with computers," his mum, Sabine, told Reuters.
