Fabolous Stable After Manhattan Shooting
Oct 17, 7:41 AM (ET)
By SAMANTHA GROSS
ak.imgfarm.com/images/ap/FABOLOUS_SHOT.sff_NY109_20061017061940.jpg
NEW YORK (AP) - Rapper Fabolous was shot early Tuesday as he stood at a Manhattan parking garage, spurring a sequence of events that left him both hospitalized in stable condition and under arrest, police said.
The rapper, whose legal name is John Jackson, was shot once in the thigh when a male with a gun approached him and three others and opened fire, police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wysokowski said.
The four jumped into a vehicle and fled, attracting the attention of police when they ran a red light. Officers stopped them and discovered two loaded guns in the vehicle, both of which were apparently unlicensed, Wysokowski said. All four men were arrested, and charges were pending.
The rapper was taken to a hospital. Police were searching for the shooter.
The Brooklyn native's hits have included, "Breathe" and "Can't Deny It," and his songs cover topics ranging from romance to street life and violence. He recently took part in the taping of the VH1 Hip Hop Honors, which were to air Tuesday evening.
An e-mail seeking comment from a representative at Def Jam Recordings was not immediately returned early Tuesday. The label is producing the rapper's upcoming solo album, due out in December, according to Fabolous' Web page on MySpace.com.
Another rapper shot? No way! Say it isn't so!
With a belt buckle like that, how does he even sit down?

Well first of all bob, you'll notice the 10,000 lb chain around his neck. That's his bling, not his belt buckle. He he...that would be a cooler belt buckle.
Also if anyone has seen the Sopranos you'll remember when the rapper hired a mafioso to shoot him to get street cred...like 50 cent. I wonder if this is the same thing.
To make a commentary on rap and black culture: Rap has hurt black people more than anything I can think of (besides white people that is). First of all, it gives younge, black males a desire to become easily rich and support the ghetto. I can't tell you how people black males I know (not THAT many) who strive to get into the rap biz. I shake my head everytime I hear them say it. Do they really expect to make it? I mean look how many rappers are out there, and come on, most of them, have as much talent as a beanstalk. You can tell the generic rappers from the "real" ones by their music videos. If they just have their entire neighborhood behind them bobbing up and down and a few girls and cars...they are just the cookie cutter image.
Second of all rap hurts black women. More black women today are getting higher education and better paying jobs. This makes it harder to find a black male with similar characteristics. This is why more black women are either not marrying or dating outside their "race" (only one race, the human race, but I use the generic term). The idea of "I'm going to be a famous rapper like Jay-Z or 2Pac, or Puffy" is as remote as saying "I'm going to be a professional baseball/football/basketball/etc palyer". Even if you ARE a decent player, that won't mean you'll get signed right out of high school. That means while the black female is continuing college, the black males are sitting around waiting for their "big break".
Third, rap hurts the image of black men. The gangsta lifestyle is not something to be proud of. Look at the rappers today? Are they still from "da streets"? Hmm the diamonds, the booze, the cars? No, they make money off the image of the ghetto and from the people who live there (although 90% of rap is bought by white college kids). They do nothing to go back to their ghetto block and start after school programs or give money to churches or school or the YMCA. They spend their money on themselves because "they've earned it and they were owed something for their hard lives". When whites and blacks still have stereotypes that hurt us both, rap gives moronic whites another berage of ammo to fuel their racism. The gangsta lifestyle, the "ghetto, black" talk, the guns, the cars, the greed. The idea of, this is what every black person strives to be and thinks. The black community hurts itself (just like the Arab) for not speaking out and condoning this music that building up the lifestyle of shooting, drugs, booze, loose women, and death.
My last point is that it hurts women, esp black women. Look at any music video and you will see the girl with nothing on with a nice back basically treated like an animal or worse an object. You have them as servents in Flava's vids, you have them as dogs on actual leashes in Snoops vids, and in all of them women are not held to be people of respect let alone people. The women in the video are exploited, the women who idolize these women are too, and so are the women who still like the rappers. These women go to the clubs and let the rappers do whatever they want just for the fame or the money or the booze. The words "skeet skeet skeet" are something that has even lowered the standard of women to outside world. I won't go into what it is because I'm pretty sure we all know what it means. Not to mention, the independent, black woman who gets her college degree, gets a real job, has to contend with these images and striving not to be like them and make people see either her as just a good worker or her as what black women can accomplish.
I'm not saying all rap is bad and some make good political or social commentary. I just think it shows you the greed of man, white or black, and the intollerance of both "races". The black communuity should condem these behaviors (and some do...there's a group at WMU who does so) and these "heroes from the streets" should invest in those same streets to improve them.
Sorry for that diatribe but I just felt like typing that up.

Universal sues video-sharing websites
By Joshua Chaffin in New York
Published: October 17 2006 20:27 | Last updated: October 17 2006 20:27
Universal Music has launched the established media industry’s first legal action against rapidly growing user-generated websites by filing copyright suits against start-ups Grouper.com and Bolt.com.
Hmm aren't men enough to take on the top dogs. Nope have to go for the start up groups. Good luck with that. As you kill the small fishes the bait will go to the bigger ones.
Quote:
In separate lawsuits, Universal alleged that Grouper and Bolt had built up traffic by encouraging users to share music videos from its artists without their permission.
In one incident, it claimed a video for the Mariah Carey song “Shake it Off” was viewed more than 50,000 times on Grouper without the company’s permission.
And this is different than watching artist vids on Myspace? Oh it's not. How about watching it on YouTube? Oh it's not. Is that because the billionares own those "legal" sites? Yes it is.
Quote:
Universal is demanding that they halt those actions and pay millions of dollars in compensation. Universal also reserved the right to add Sony Pictures Entertainment to the suit. Sony acquired Grouper in August for an estimated $65m.
Sony and Bolt executives had not seen the suit on Tuesday and could not immediately comment on its claims.
So...umm...corporations are getting into the piracy gig? I don't think anyone would want to take Sony on, esp the movie industry.
Quote:
User-generated sites have exploded in popularity in recent months by allowing users to share video clips online. Last week, Google confirmed the sector’s appeal when it agreed to buy YouTube, the most popular user-generated site, for $1.65bn.
However, such sites have created a dilemma for established media companies.
While they offer companies the promise of promoting their content to a vast new audience on the web, they also pose the risk of massive copyright violations. Universal publicly threatened to sue YouTube before changing tack and signing a partnership with the company last week to distribute its music videos.
Universal was persuaded after YouTube agreed to pay a small licensing fee for the material and to share associated advertising revenues.
Aaron Cohen, Bolt’s chief executive, disputed the notion that Bolt’s function was to share professionally-made videos, saying content was created by users.
Boy don't you wish there was some high high court system that could plainly state the rules of the legality of everything, something like oh...the Court de la Supreme? Or how about a body of govt that writes and passes laws to govern actions? Some sort of Congress looking-branch? It's strange how the govt wants in our business all the time except for when they can help the poor, the tired, the downtrodden masses.

I know how this lawsuit happened. The kid doesn't go but all his/her friends do. They come back or sitting at lunch and ask why he/she wasn't their. Then they proceed to make fun of him/her. This lawsuit is about "bullying". What does this mother want? Stop all churches too because her kid feels left out? How about we stop all sports that need some students to leave early? Her kid might feel left out there too.

Controversial new Bible cuts out difficult gospel passages -18/10/06
A new Bible translation is causing controversy after it cut out difficult parts surrounding economic justice, possessions and money.
The new bible version, released by the Western Bible Foundation in the Netherlands, has created a storm by trying to make the Christian gospel more palatable.
I wonder if they took out the part about not chaning the Bible in Revelations? Shoot they prob just took out that book.
Quote:
According to Chairman Mr. De Rijke the foundation has reacted to a growing wish of many churches to be market-oriented and more attractive. "Jesus was very inspiring for our inner health, but we don't need to take his naïve remarks about money seriously. He didn't study economics, obviously."
Wow, I wonder if this guy said this with a straight face. He didn't study morality in college either. He didn't study marriage or relationships. Can't take those seriously. Oh he didn't study maricles and the phliosphy on God. So umm...we just have a guy who lived and did "stuff".
Quote:
According to De Rijke no serious Christian takes these texts literally. "What if all Christians stopped being anxious, for example, and started expecting everything from God? Or gave their possessions to the poor, for that matter. Our economy would be lost. The truth is quite the contrary: a strong economy and a healthy work ethic is a gift from God."
We'd all be like God and doing what he wanted us to do, that's what would happen. Plus this guy is a moron if he thinks that what the Bible says. Maybe he need to read things in context.
Quote:
The foundation wanted to "boldly go where no one else has gone before" by cutting out the confusing texts.
Umm people have been doing that since the Bible was written. The Gnostics, Hitler, Ray Bardberry (well in a book at least).
Quote:
“We don't use them anyway! There's no single Christian selling his possessions and giving them to the poor."
Me thinks this guy needs to shut the heck up.
Quote:
The Western Bible is published – in Dutch only so far – by the well-known Christian publisher Buijten & Schipperheijn. IN it, some of the most important passages of the Bible: the Ten Commandments, sections of Isaiah, Proverbs, and the Sermon on the Mount, contain holes where the original translation urged radical actions around money, justice or affluence.
Hundreds of Western Bibles have been sold in the first few weeks, whilst anxious Christians filled newspapers and web logs with their doubts.
Sometimes Christians seem to have more anger than humour, however. The names of the board, ‘De Rijke’ (meaning ‘the rich’) and ‘Fortuijn’ (meaning ‘fortune’), as well as the holes in the pages of the Western Bible hint to the truth: the Western Bible is a joke.
It is published by Time to Turn, a network of Christian students and young adults in the Netherlands "who want to choose a sustainable and just way of life, based on their faith in Jesus Christ."
So we're suppose to trust that Jesus saves us from sin but doesn't know what the crap he's talking about when he....speaks.
Quote:
They do not believe in a new legalism, or in a utopian state, but in a God who is willing to deliver the world from materialism and injustice. Time to Turn is linked to the international student movement Speak.
Frank Mulder, chairman of Time to Turn, is surprised by the commotion.
"Many Christians accept the Western lifestyle, including the degradation of creation and the injustice of our trade, and they only take the easy parts of the gospel. But it isn't until we publish this gospel with holes, that they get confused!"
Time to Turn are soon to publish a bible study about the holes.
This is another guy who needs to check his brain.

Opec chief calls for immediate output cut
By Carola Hoyos, Chief Energy Correspondent
Published: October 8 2006 19:09 | Last updated: October 8 2006 19:09
The president of Opec on Sunday called on members of the cartel to put into immediate effect an agreement to cut output by 1m barrels a day, underscoring the group’s determination to curb falls in the oil price.
In a letter whose contents were revealed to the FT, Edmund Daukoru, Nigeria’s oil minister, urged his fellow ministers to implement their country’s share of the pro-rata quota reduction.
A communiqué announcing the measure, which reduces Opec’s quota to 27m barrels a day, is expected on Monday, ending any doubts that the group is intent on stopping prices from falling much below $60 a barrel. The agreement could push up oil prices on Monday.
In addition, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Iran, key members, are pushing the cartel to meet in Vienna next week to ratify the deal in order to make a public show of unity.
Chakib Khelil, Algeria’s oil minister, said on Sunday: “What is important is that the market finds the Opec position credible.” He added: “That would send a clear signal that Opec means business.”
Other members, including Nigeria, believe a communiqué would be sufficient. Nevertheless, an Opec official said the meeting was likely to be held and that the preferred date among ministers was October 18-19.
Mr Daukoru’s letter confirms last week’s report in the FT that the group had reached an informal agreement to cut output by 1m b/d – the first Opec quota reduction since April 2004. It also reveals that the cut will be from the group’s official quota level, rather than from its production volumes.
The group has already trimmed some production in the last two months, so this cut could end up being more in the range of 500,000 b/d than the 1m b/d to be announced. Saudi Arabia will shoulder the bulk of the reduction.
The market remains sceptical about the exact size of the cut. In addition there are doubts about Nigeria’s real production cuts as the country has only been able to pump 75 per cent of its capacity because of rebel attacks.
However, following the FT’s initial story, a Deutsche Bank analyst wrote: “The announcement of a move towards a 1m b/d cut is early, and aggressive, and right in front of US elections, indicating a real concern on the part of the Saudis to control [protect] prices from more downside.”
In fact, many Opec officials believe this will be the first in a series of adjustments. The group’s economists estimate it will need to pump 26.97m b/d between April and June next year, far below current production levels of 29.5m b/d.
World oil prices have dropped about 25 per cent from a high of $78.40 reached in August. The decline followed a slowdown in US oil consumption and the easing of tensions over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Boy Scouts offer merit badge for not pirating
October 23, 2006 - 9:17AM
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A Boy Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, etc. etc. He is also respectful of copyrights. Boy Scouts in the Los Angeles area will now be able to earn an activity patch for learning about the evils of downloading pirated movies and music.
The patch shows a film reel, a music CD and the international copyright symbol, a "C" enclosed in a circle.
The movie industry has developed the curriculum.
"Working with the Boy Scouts of Los Angeles, we have a real opportunity to educate a new generation about how movies are made, why they are valuable, and hopefully change attitudes about intellectual property theft," Dan Glickman, chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, said in a statement Friday.
Scouts will be instructed in the basics of copyright law and learn how to identify five types of copyrighted works and three ways copyrighted materials may be stolen.
Scouts also must choose one activity from a list that includes visiting a movie studio to see how many people can be harmed by film piracy. They also can create public service announcements urging others not to steal movies or music.
Many of the Scouts in the Los Angeles area come from families whose members are somehow connected to the region's sprawling entertainment industry, said Victor Zuniga, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Area Council.
The program is being introduced to the 52,000 Scouts in the Los Angeles area, with plans to offer it to other California councils early next year. The program will reach Scouts ages 6 to 21.
Unlike a merit badge, an activity patch is not required to advance in the Scouts. Instead, they are awarded for various recreational and educational activities, such as conservation or volunteering at a food bank.

And you know I thought about posting that on Sat.
This is a perfect example of how those industries with a lot of money can influence the American culture. We really screwed ourselves over with the invention of the Corporation back in the day. If fact there's a great vid out called just that "The Corporation" very eye opening.
I wonder if the troops can question why copyright is necessary and have a logical discussion besides bring up "well we say it's against the law".
I would love to find a meeting and as just a few questions:
Me: Excuse me Mr. MPAA/RIAA can I borrow a pen, I forgot mine.
Him: Sure here you go.
Me: Nice pen, mind if I keep it?
Him: Uhh sure I guess.
Me: Quick!!! Someone call the police!
Crowd: Shocked*
Me: This man has just engaged in piracy of a pen. We need the PAA to prosecute this case.
I have other arguements but I won't waste your time.

'All Chinese can look the same' says Scottish judge
Mon Oct 23, 12:07 PM ET
LONDON (AFP) - A Scottish judge cleared a student from China of a motoring offence after claiming that "all Chinese people can look the same", a newspaper has reported.
Sheriff Margaret Gimblett dismissed the evidence of two police officers who had identified Hui Yu, 23, who had been charged with driving without insurance.
She was quoted by The Times Monday as telling Greenock Sheriff Court, near Glasgow: "Without wanting to be derogatory in any way, sometimes it is said that all black people look the same at first glance and the same can be said that all Chinese people can look the same to a native Scot.
"It's only when you have time to look that you begin to see the differences."
Two police officers identified Hui as a man they stopped at a petrol station but Hui denied the offence, saying he was at his girlfriend's flat at the time.
Seemingly agreeing with Gimblett, Hui said after the case: "It is true that people from one nationality or race can look the same to people from another nationality or race.
"It is the same for Chinese people -- we find it quite hard at first to tell the difference between groups of Scots," the Times quoted him as saying.
A spokesman for Britain's Commission for Racial Equality watchdog said that the sheriff's comments were "not particularly helpful".
But both the Chinese headteacher of the Chinese School in Glasgow and the chairman of the Scotland-China Association backed Gimblett, saying the comments were not meant to be derogatory.
This is the first time I am saying this: I WISH I WERE CHINESE!!! I would go to Scottland and rang havok on the Scotts! I would pee on William Wallaces statue, I would pee in the beer, I would pee on the Queen. After all I'm Chinese I have a small penis, yet a lot of pee, and I look like all Chinese people!!!
