Tons of immigrants, both legal and otherwise, and their supporters are planning to go on strike on May 1st. May I be the first to say...
Good riddance!

Tax on downloaded music? Yes cause that's exactly what we want to do when we want people to stop illegally downloading music and start buying the music again.

A CBS affiliate actually investigated that? Was it a slow news day for them, or what?

"TOM Cruise has claimed he will eat the PLACENTA after fiancée Katie Holmes has their baby.
The actor, 43 — who wants her to give birth in silence according to his Scientology cult rules — said: “I’m gonna eat the placenta, too.
“I thought that would be good. Very nutritious. I’m going to eat the cord and the placenta right there.”
But when a GQ magazine interviewer said it would be a big meal, Cruise replied: “OK, maybe I won’t.”"
That's just sick...I hope this is a Tom Cruise thing because I would rather deal with DC-8s with rockets and soul catchers than this!

Ahh just another story in the "I don't even OWN a computer" in RIAA's "righteous" battle against those EVIL consumers. If they don't buy our stuff sue them, if we make bad music let's just blame it on those evil pirates. Pirates are everyone...including the 12 year old who payed for a service, the 76 y/o grandmother, and the family without a computer! Also let us station ourselves out of the US and operated in the US. Also let's have a SWAT team of our own to raid houses in Australia. Oh and let us pirate "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" (this was done by the MPAA but it's still...same crazy people).
I wonder if these cases would go to federal court or civil. If anyone gets these subpenos they should really fight them. Granted they probably did it. However inconsistent finding could lead to defense lawyers asking for evidence obtained by people who do not have a vested interest in the outcome of a case. I really don't even see how these things are legal other than a arm twister for people who don't have the wherewithall to deal with the law properly.
RIAA: YOU DID IT!
Person X: Prove it.
RIAA: We have your internet activity.
Person X: It was routed through my computer...wasn't me.
RIAA: We have the proof you did it!
Person X: You made them up.
RIAA: No we didn't. Just because we are loosing $10 billion dollars a year from people like you because we make horrible music that no one wants to buy!
Person X: *Kicks RIAA in the crotch!*

Quote:
“The industry’s anti-piracy efforts have deterred a sizeable number of would-be illegal downloaders,” the RIAA statement reads. “Although a significant online problem undoubtedly persists, particularly with hard-core, frequent peer-to-peer users, absent action by the industry, the illegal down-loading world would be exponentially worse.”
I dont know if they know this, but 1/3 of all internet traffic is torrents, and thats probrably up by now. These guys really dont know just how bad it is for them and good for us.

I would also like to make a comment on your quote you put up.
Deterrence is so hard to measure. That's why no one can really use the arguement for the death penalty. "If the punishment is we kill you if you kill someone, I don't kill because you would kill me." I really don't think deterence holds that much affect unless if it's within a small number of people. It's almost like saying, "This rock keeps tigers away...and look no tigers" ALSO I am the one selling the rocks...so of course I'm going to say that my rocks work. This is what RIAA is saying in this statement you quoted. I really think what has "dettered" a sizeable number of people is the advent FINALLY of purchasing mp3's through pay services for little money and only songs ones want.
Ok now onto another somethin something.
http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=entertainmentNews&storyid=20...
Our boy, James Cameron, says digital animation will save the industry. Hmm let me see here. Star Wars, lost gleam because of too much digital affects, actors were acting to people in green suits, so no chemistry really took place. The mid years of movies was by far more profitable and memorable than they are now. The best "special affects" they had was with people like, the master, Ray Harry Housin. Also excellent movies like Tron and Ghostbusters used crayons to help the movie affects. But still I believe that the over use of special affects will kill the movie industry not help it. Also if Hollywood keeps writing CRAP! that is banged out worse than a monkey on an acid trip...I think we found our culprit for why H-Wood sucks.
Let's look at it another way...we have no more actors and we just have digital animation, everything is synthisized and the movie is about oh let's say a Will Farrel type animation trys to save a gay duck from te evil lord Zod. Critics hail it as a "masterpiece of our time". However it flops...piracy is supposedly to blame. However no one is pirating anymore because all the movies suck.
Then let's take a chick flick. Man meets girl...they fall in love...girl is murdered...man grieves an learns a life lesson from this girl that changed his life from what he once was. You have chemistry from the actors in the picture...you can feel the love, the tension, etc. You can't feel that way about things you know are animated. How many of us cried at Passion of the Christ....now how many of us cried at Final Fantasy - Spirits Within, and I'm not talking disappointment crying either. That's another example of how animators let us down. Sure we're wooed by them but with a sucky story line...I'd rather watch Howard the Duck...in 3-D than FF again. At least there I could feel the love between duck and woman!

I realize Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within lacked a decent story, but to claim you'd rather see Howard the Duck is pushing it a bit, don't you think?
I think I'd rather gouge my eyes out with pixie sticks than watch that horrid excuse for a movie.

That article refers to 3-D, like the Terminator ride in Universal Studios 3-D, not digital animation 3-D. Cameron is just saying there's not enough incentive for normal folk to want to go to see a movie in the theater, because theaters dont offer much more than home entertainment systems can give. Now if the movies were a 3-D experience where things popped out at you, that would be something different, that you couldn't get at home.
I do agree that dig. animation needs to be used to support the plot, not be the subject of it.

What could happen? Tax on emails? Limit on websites one can have? No more free services?

I can't believe you quoted TPM. Outside of DU, that has to be one of the biggest pits of democrat handwringing I've ever come across.
