I've been keeping a close eye on the Oculus Rift virtual reality device and I was going to pick up a second-hand dev kit, but now I'm having second thoughts. Facebook has announced intentions to buy Oculus for $2 billion. Lots of people that are huge supporters of the technology are up in arms over the announcement, as this almost surely spells doom for the game-oriented design of the product. Facebook has a history of buying companies and running them straight into the ground.

Valve was working on their own VR tech for awhile and gave away a lot of their research to Oculus. Apparently, no good deed goes unpunished in the business world. Also, John Carmack of Id fame (Doom, Quake, Rage, etc.) left Id and their parent company Bethesda a couple months ago to become the CTO of Oculus. That means John Carmack now works for Facebook. Think about that for a minute.

OK, so maybe you wouldn't download a car, but a company in China is now using a large-scale 3D printer to build houses.

I really think this is the future of the construction industry. Sure, there will always be fancy buildings that aren't really amenable to 3D printing, but I imagine designers, engineers, and architects will gradually adapt their projects toward 3D printing construction.
