Guitar Hero' whiz aiming higher
BY MATT EHLERS, Staff Writer
It's a small plastic thing, resembling a guitar in basic appearance only.
But Blake Peebles brings energy to the room when he slides the strap over his skinny shoulder and steps atop the wooden box that serves as a stage.
As the music begins, Blake quickly presses buttons on the guitar in time to a speed-metal tune blasting from the giant TV. It is an odd sensation, to watch a young man control the sounds of a rock song with a toy instrument, but this is "Guitar Hero," one of the most popular video game franchises in recent memory. Blake is one of the better players in the country.
Other than his fingers, Blake barely moves while playing. His feet are set in place and his eyes are locked on the screen as he peers through a mop of curly brown hair. Gaming for him is serious business. It's his job.
Among the prizes he's won playing "Guitar Hero" tournaments: gift certificates, gaming equipment and chicken sandwiches.
Blake is 16, resides in North Raleigh and lives to play video games. On this night, he's at the Fox and Hound in Raleigh's North Hills shopping district. It's the restaurant's regular Sunday "Guitar Hero" night, and Blake and his family have come to watch and play. His brother and sister are here, as are his mom and dad, an aunt and an uncle, some cousins and some friends.
But in the end, it's not the people related to Blake who confirm his plastic-guitar prowess. It's the group of 20-somethings sitting at a nearby table, who applaud when Blake finishes playing along to "Through the Fire and Flames," viewed as the game's toughest song.
"It's pretty sick," says Andrew Gambling, 27, who describes himself as a casual player. "He's talented."
Blake is appreciative of the applause and grins shyly when it is mentioned to him. But he's not very happy with his score.
"That's probably the worst I've ever done," he says, which seems impossible. The game moves at warp speed, so Blake's fingers do too.
This is not a competitive environment, so the score hardly matters. But his attitude about it underscores some Peebles family truisms: Blake is so dedicated to gaming that his parents let him quit school so he can better concentrate on it.
They pay for home tutors instead. Mom and Dad do this, even though there are very few people in this country who make their living playing competitive video games.
Blake very much would like to be one of them, but a boy cannot live on chicken sandwiches alone...

His parents are retards. What is going to happen when the Guitar Hero craze dies off and he has no skills? I can see him working at McDonald's bragging about how he used to be an awesome Guitar Hero player. I would pay big money to see the look on his face when his pimply-faced coworkers say "WTF is Guitar Hero?"

Wow that's just retarded. Fata1ity might be the only person to get anywhere with competitive gaming and even he's loathed as a Paris Hilton on the geek community.
Let him take up a real skill...you know...LIKE PLAYING THE ACTUAL SONG AND AN ACTUAL GUITAR!

1. If you can't/won't at least finish high school you deserve to be a hobo.
2. That episode was pretty good, best part was when he played guitar hero acoustically...freaking classic.

This was posted on AR15.com today. I thought it was pretty interesting, so I stole it.

The Scrapping of the Kursk
The bow was sawed off with a diamond rope while she sat on the bottom of the Arctic Sea.
You can see the anti-ship missiles still in their launchers, all foamed in. There's a nuclear power plant in that mess somewhere.
i47.photobucket.com/albums/f159/cleaner1369/02.jpg
K-141 Kursk was a Russian nuclear cruise missile submarine which was lost with all hands when it sank in the Barents Sea on August 12, 2000. It was named after the Russian city Kursk , around which the largest tank battle in military history, the Battle of Kursk, took place in 1943.
The Kursk sailed out to sea to perform an exercise of firing dummy torpedoes at Pyotr Velikiy, a Kirov class battlecruiser. On August 12, 2000 at 11:28 local time , the torpedoes were fired, but an explosion occurred soon after in the submarine.
The only credible report to-date is that this was due to the failure and explosion of one of Kursk’s new developmental torpedoes. The chemical explosion blasted with the force of 100-250 kg of TNT and registered 2.2 on the Richter scale. The submarine sank to a depth of 108 metres, approximately 135km (85 miles) off Severomorsk. A second explosion, 135 seconds after the initial event, measured between 3.5 and 4.4 on the Richter scale, equivalent to 3-7 tons of TNT. Either this explosion or the earlier one propelled large pieces of debris far back through the submarine.
Kursk was eventually raised from her grave by a Dutch team using the barge Giant 4, and 115 of the 118 dead were recovered and laid to rest in Russia. Russian officials have strenuously denied claims that the sub was carrying nuclear warheads. When the boat was raised by a salvage operation in 2001, there were considerable fears that moving the wreck could trigger explosions.

Manly Bike for Sale
Date: 2008-07-22, 10:18AM PDT
Bike for sale
What kind of bike? I don't know, I'm not a bike scientist. What I am though is a manly guy looking to sell his bike. This bike is made out of metal and kick ass spokes. The back reflector was taken off, but if you think that deters me from riding at night, you're way wrong. I practiced ninja training in Japan's mount Fuji for 5 years and the first rule they teach about ninja biking is that back reflectors let the enemy know where you are. Not having a rear reflector is like saying "FUCK YOU CAR, JUST TRY AND FIND ME".
The bike says Giant on the side because it's referring to my junk, but rest assured even if you have tiny junk that Giant advertisement is going to remain right where it is. I bought this bike for 300 dollars from a retired mercenary that fought in both World War 1 and World War 2 and had his right arm bitten off by a shark in the Phillipines while stationed there as a shark handler. When he sold it to me I had to arm wrestle him for the honor to buy it. I broke his arm in 7 places when I did. He was so impressed with me he offered me to be his son but I thought that was sissy shit so I said no way.
The bike has some rusted screws, but that just shows how much of a bad ass you are. Everyone knows rusted screws on a bike means that you probably drove it underwater and that's bad ass in itself. Those screws can be replaced with shiny new ones, but if you're going to go to that trouble why not just punch yourself in the balls since you're probably a dickless lizard who doesn't like to look intimidating.
The bike is for men because the seat is flat or some shit and not shaped like a dildo. If you like flat seated bikes you're going to love this thing because it doesn't try to penetrate your ass or anything.
I've topped out at 75 miles per hour on this uphill but if you're just a regular man you'll probably top it out at 10 miles per hour. This thing is listed as a street bike which is man-code for bike tank. The bike has 7 speeds in total:
Gear 1 - Sissy Gear
Gear 2 - Less Sissy Gear
Gear 3 - Least Sissy Gear
Gear 4 - Boy Gear
Gear 5 - Pre-teen Boy Gear
Gear 6 - Manly Gear
Gear 7 - Big Muscles Gear
I only like gear 6 and 7 to be honest.
Additionally, this tool of all immense men comes with a gigantic lock to keep it secure. The lock is the size of a bull's testicles and tells people you don't fuck around with locking up your bike tank. It tells would-be-thieves "Hey asshole, touch this bike and I'll appear from the bushes ready to club you with a two-by-four".
Bike is for 150 OBO (and don't give me no panzy prices)
Admittedly, that was pretty funny.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports:
The freezing temperatures are proof of the urgent need to cut carbon pollution, according to WWF development and sustainability program manager Paul Toni.
“We can expect more extremes in climate,” Mr Toni said.
Mr Toni said if action was not taken, more volatile weather would be on the radar.
So now carbon emissions are not only responsible for the rapid heating of the Earth, but at the same time are the prime cause of global cooling, according to the WWF.

Maybe next year will be entirely "normal." Then, we'll get to see these idiots blame neutral weather on global warming.

Conyers to 'evil' media: 'Leave me alone!'
BY ZACHARY GORCHOW • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • September 9, 2008
If incoming Detroit City Council President Monica Conyers wants to persuade residents that she has learned to control her temper as she prepares to lead the council, Monday was a bad start.
Conyers, after exiting the elevators on the 13th floor of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, stormed into council offices ranting at the news media.
"You are all evil!" she shouted. "Please leave me alone!"
Conyers' outburst happened before a reporter asked her a question. She then asked a City Council sergeant to escort her.
And then, after entering the council chambers, she interrupted the Public Health and Safety Committee's discussion about non-motorized transportation in the city to bemoan the presence of reporters near her house. She said a council member's job is "part-time" and doesn't warrant such scrutiny.
Conyers makes $81,000 a year. Council members also get a city car -- a Ford Crown Victoria -- to drive.
Afterward, Conyers was approached by a reporter wanting to interview her. Conyers responded, "Please," and continued to walk away.
Conyers' spokeswoman Denise Johnson said Conyers was upset because reporters were waiting for her outside a courthouse where she was scheduled Monday for jury duty.
Monday's outburst is the latest in a long string of incidents involving Conyers. After winning election, but before taking office, Conyers was involved in a bar fight but was exonerated.
Earlier this year, she was accused of threatening mayoral appointee DeDan Milton at a pension board meeting, but was not charged. Then she taunted Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. by calling him "Shrek." Most recently, police were called to her hotel room in Denver after she complained about it.
Council members recoiled at Conyers' characterization of the job as "part-time." Councilwoman Alberta Tinsley-Talabi said she considers the job not just full-time, but "overtime."
Some council members tried to put the best face on the latest Conyers incident. Asked whether she had confidence in Conyers to run the council, Councilwoman Martha Reeves said, "I have confidence in her as being a woman with a lot of heart and a lot of drive and a love for the city of Detroit."

WASHINGTON - Speculation by large investors — and not supply and demand for oil — were a primary reason for the surge in oil prices during the first half of the year and the more recent price declines, an independent study concluded Wednesday.
The report by Masters Capital Management said investors poured $60 billion into oil futures markets during the first five months of the year as oil prices soared from $95 a barrel in January to $145 a barrel by July.
Since then, these investors have withdrawn $39 billion from those markets as prices have retreated dramatically, the report said. Oil traded at about $102 a barrel Wednesday on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
told you (whoever)
yes we have a free market, etc, but comon when you affect the lives of most people in the world cause you want to make some more billions.... yea, go die.

Of course this means the free market should find an alternative...not just give it over to the govt to screw it even more.
