Almost. The large chunk of metal they were going to put in was sitting outside and built up water. Water turned to ice. Throw that all into a 3-4k degree furnace and party.

Berkeley council tells Marines to leave
By Doug Oakley
Article Launched: 01/30/2008 01:48:16 PM PST
Hey-hey, ho-ho, the Marines in Berkeley have got to go.
That's the message from the Berkeley City Council, which voted 6-3 Tuesday night to tell the U.S. Marines that its Shattuck Avenue recruiting station "is not welcome in the city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders."
In addition, the council voted to explore enforcing its law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation against the Marines because of the military's don't ask, don't tell policy. And it officially encouraged the women's peace group Code Pink to impede the work of the Marines in the city by protesting in front of the station.
In a separate item, the council voted 8-1 to give Code Pink a designated parking space in front of the recruiting station once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week from noon to 4 p.m.
Councilman Gordon Wozniak opposed both items.
The Marines have been in Berkeley for a little more than a year, having moved from Alameda in December of 2006. For about the past four months, Code Pink has been protesting in front of the station.
"I believe in the Code Pink cause. The Marines don't belong here, they shouldn't have come here, and they should leave," said Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates after votes were cast.
A Marines representative did not respond to requests for comment.
The resolution telling the Marines they are unwelcome and directing the city attorney to explore issues of sexual orientation discrimination was brought to the council by the city's Peace and Justice commission.
The recommendation to give Code Pink a parking space for protesting and a free sound permit was brought by council members Linda Maio and Max Anderson.
Code Pink on Wednesday started circulating petitions to put a measure on the November ballot in Berkeley that would make it more difficult to open military recruiting offices near homes, parks, schools, churches libraries or health clinics. The group needs 5,000 signatures to make the ballot.
Even though the council items passed, not everyone is happy with the work of Code Pink. Some employees and owners of businesses near the Marines office have had enough of the group and its protests.
"My husband's business is right upstairs, and this (protesting) is bordering on harassment," Dori Schmidt told the council. "I hope this stops."
An employee of a nearby business who asked not to be identified said Wednesday the elderly Code Pink protesters are aggressive, take up parking spaces, block the sidewalk with their yoga moves, smoke in the doorways, and are noisy.
"Most of the people around here think they're a joke," the woman said.
Wozniak said he was opposed to giving Code Pink a parking space because it favors free speech rights of one group over another.
"There's a line between protesting and harassing, and that concerns me," Wozniak said. "It looks like we are showing favoritism. We have to respect the other side, and not abuse their rights. This is not good policy."
Ninety-year-old Fran Rachel, a Code Pink protester who spoke at the council meeting, said the group's request for a parking space and noise permit was especially important because the Marines are recruiting soldiers who may die in an unjust war.
"This is very serious," Rachel said. "This isn't a game; it's mass murder. There's a sickness of silence of people not speaking out against the war. We have to do this."
Anderson, a former Marine who said he was "drummed out" of the corps when he took a stand against the Vietnam War, said he'd love to see the Marines high tale it out of town.
"We are confronted with an organization that can spend billions of dollars on propaganda," Anderson said. "This is not Okinawa here; we're involved in a naked act of aggression. If we can provide a space for ordinary people to express themselves against this kind of barbarity, then we should be doing it."
Next time an earthquake hits San Francisco, I hope the national guard tells them to suck it when they beg for help.

This is really an old story. Kalifornia has been kicking out military recruiters in High Schools and other public areas for over a year now.
We really should hire the Army Corps of Engineers to start digging around CA until they breakaway and float off into the Pacific.

Microsoft Offers $44.6B for Yahoo

By Michael Liedtke, AP Business Writer
Microsoft Makes Unexpected $44.6B Bid for Yahoo; Internet Icon Is Studying It
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. has pounced on slumping Internet icon Yahoo Inc. with an unsolicited takeover offer of $44.6 billion in its boldest bid yet to challenge Google Inc.'s dominance of the lucrative online search and advertising markets. The Justice Department says it is interested in reviewing antitrust issues associated with it.
The surprise offer of $31 per share, made late Thursday and announced Friday, seizes on Yahoo's weakness while Microsoft tries to muscle up in a high-stakes battle with Google likely to define the technology landscape for years to come.
In a statement Friday, Yahoo said it will "carefully and promptly" study Microsoft's bid.
With its profits steadily sliding, Yahoo's stock slipped to a four-year low earlier this week and a new management team has been trying to steer a turnaround but sees more turbulence through 2008.
The announcement lifted Yahoo's share price by almost 50 percent in morning trading, while Google fell almost 8 percent, dragged down by a fourth-quarter earnings report that missed Wall Street expectations.
In conference call Friday morning, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer indicated he won't take no for an answer after Yahoo rebuffed takeover overtures a year ago.
"This is a decision we have -- and I have -- thought long and hard about," Ballmer said. "We are confident it's the right path for Microsoft and Yahoo."
To underscore its resolve, Microsoft is offering a 62 percent premium to Yahoo's closing stock price Thursday. If the deal is consummated, it would be by far the largest acquisition in Microsoft's history, eclipsing last year's $6 billion purchase of online ad service aQuantive.
Since reaching a 52-week high of $34.08 in October, Yahoo shares have fallen 46 percent. Yahoo climbed $9.41 a share, or 49 percent, to $28.59 in morning trading. Microsoft shares fell $1.43, or 4.4 percent, to $31.17.
Microsoft publicly disclosed its cash-and-stock offer in hopes of rallying support from Yahoo's shareholders, making it more difficult for Yahoo's board to turn down the bid.
In a letter released Friday, Ballmer pointedly noted Yahoo's financial performance has deteriorated since Microsoft was spurned a year ago. At that time, Ballmer said he was told Yahoo believed it was better off on its own.
"A year has gone by, and the competitive situation has not improved," Ballmer wrote in his letter.
Microsoft's previous offer was rebuffed by Terry Semel, who stepped aside last year as chief executive under shareholder pressure.
Microsoft sent its latest takeover offer to Yahoo late Thursday, shortly after Semel resigned as the company's chairman. The letter is addressed to Semel's successors, new Chairman Roy Bostock and the current CEO, co-founder Jerry Yang, who is one of Yahoo's largest shareholders.
In a prepared statement, Yahoo said its board "will evaluate this proposal carefully and promptly in the context of Yahoo's strategic plans and pursue the best course of action to maximize long-term value for shareholders."
Microsoft views Yahoo as its best chance to thwart Google, which has leveraged its leadership in Internet search and advertising to emerge as an increasingly serious threat to the world's largest software maker's persuasive influence on how people interact with computers.
Google already controls nearly 60 percent of the U.S. search market, and has been widening its lead, despite concerted efforts by both second-place Yahoo and third-place Microsoft. By combining, Microsoft and Yahoo would have a 33 percent share of the U.S. search market, according to the latest data from comScore Media Metrix.
By joining forces, Microsoft and Yahoo also would widen their narrowing advantage over Google in providing free e-mail accounts -- a service that helps foster more loyalty with users and create more advertising opportunities.
Advertisers around the world are expected to double their spending on the Internet during the next three years as more people get their news and entertainment on the Web instead of television, radio, newspapers and magazine. The trend is expected to create an $80 billion online ad market in 2010, up from an estimated $40 billion last year.
Despite an aggressive push in recent years, Microsoft's online advertising expansion hasn't paid off. Last week, the Redmond, Wash.-based company reported a 79 percent jump in its overall profit, but its online division's loss widened to $245 million.
And Yahoo has been struggling to attract more advertising even though its Web site attracts one of the biggest audiences. The Sunnyvale-based company's profit has declined for five consecutive quarters, prompting plans to cut 1,000 jobs later this month, a 7 percent reduction of its 14,300-employee work force.
Besides helping to boost its online ad revenue, Microsoft believes it could mine more profit from Yahoo by jettisoning workers and eliminating overlapping operations.
Microsoft said it sees at least $1 billion in cost savings if it buys Yahoo. Microsoft executives deflected questions about how many jobs might be lost, but the company emphasized retention packages will be offered to Yahoo engineers and other key employees, including some executives.
The fate of Yahoo's brand also is unclear if Microsoft takes over. Both Ballmer and Kevin Johnson, president of Microsoft's platforms and services division, hailed Yahoo's strong brand value but didn't commit to keeping the name alive.
Wow, I definitely didn't see this one coming.

If you want to blame the further push of adolescents onto "older" men then you have to blame it on two things.
1) The increase of broken families. The rise of divorce and the increase of single mothers leads children (and not only men/boys) to have no father figure. The family unit is strongest when based like a three legged stool (God, mother, and father). God shows absolute Truth, father shows boys how to be men and to take responsibility, and mothers show sons to not settle for someone with only pretty looks but someone who is a true "woman". Try sitting on a 3-legged stool with only 2 or even 1 leg.
2) The rise of radical feminism. Let me first clarify, I think feminism is a good cause in the sense that women should have the right to vote, own property, be able to do anything a man can do. However radical feminism came along and said, "We've been oppressed by men for so long that it's our turn to take over that role and for men to become our servants." This turns the idea of what women want in men as being these "pouty, metrosexual men". Yet when the women need protecting or someone to "man up" in the relationship they can't find it in the wussified man. This also goes back to my first point and to quote Fight Club, "We are men raised by women". Children emulate their parents, without a father what do you expect? One of two extremes (for the most part). Either someone who fights back harshly at the world because he has no sense of what his role as a man should be. The other is a too meek and too mild guy who would not be good to have a relationship with because he'd probably spend more time in front of the mirror than his woman and the same thing would be said every day, "What do you want to do? I don't know what do you want to do? I don't care. Just pick a place! I don't care."
Women...you created this problem by turning men into girls and getting knocked up by men who leave you. I don't know why you complain when this is the mess you made. YOU clean it up.

Wow, Corey, nice post. That article is
by far
the biggest pile of drivel I've read in weeks. Considering the number of IT ethics articles I've been forced to read lately, that's saying something.
Ms. Hymowitz makes an overgeneralized argument based on a largely fictional stereotype and attempts to stretch that stereotype over our entire generation. Her trivial attempts to support her argument include such brilliant bits of wisdom as,
"Maxim is selling well"
and
"Men prefer Victoria's Secret over serious drama."
Ya don't say?!
Of course we're getting married later in life. Americans are living longer than ever before and that has led to each section of our lives being extended. We live at home longer than we used to, we stay in school longer than we used to, we retire later than we used to, and so on. Why is it any surprise that we're getting married at an older age than we did fifty years ago?
In addition to that, we've created a whole new stage of life between high school and our careers. Instead of graduating (or dropping out in tenth grade) and moving straight into the workforce, we now go off to college for four years, find an entry-level job, and often go back to school for a graduate-level degree. That takes time. Even if you move into an MBA program immediately after college, you're going to be ~24 by the time you graduate. After that, plan on spending at least two years finding a career-track job, moving to your permanent location, and all the rest of that "adult stuff" before you even think about dating for keeps.
I should also point out that the "immature" activities listed by Ms. Hymowitz weren't even available thirty years ago. For instance, nobody played Halo 3 in 1970 because there was no such thing as a first-person shooter back then! Who's to say that video games wouldn't have been popular amongst the 18-34 male segment in 1970 if they were available?
The only factoids espoused by Ms. Hymowitz were that men were getting married later in life than they did in the 70's. Did you notice she failed to provide the same statistic for women? Blaming this issue entirely on men is nothing more than misandry. I love how sexism is perfectly acceptable and even "cute" or "empowering" when it takes the form of misandry, but if you flip the tables and make a misogynistic comment that disparages womanhood, you're the freakin' devil.
My favorite part of this article is found toward the end, where Ms. Hymowitz provides examples of immature men. She can't be bothered to provide even the most trivial anecdote to support her argument. Instead, she mentions
fictional
characters from a
book
and a
movie
. I've not seen "Knocked Up," but I would assume it's about as valid a reference for this article as "Hackers" is for an IT security paper.
Here's my personal analysis of the paper: Kay Hymowitz is either too fat, too ugly, or too feminist to have a chance with a decent man, and she's venting her anger on all men through this poorly contrived opinion article. She needs to take off the beret, shave her armpits, and get with the twenty first century.

I will go back to a quote someone in my psyc class told the bitch of an instructor, "The reason you aren't married isn't because of men being sexist. It is because you are a frigid feminist bitch who feels anything with a penis is evil. You always talk about your sister and say she is fat and has low self esteem because of it. Well guess what, you also said she is happily married with kids. Something to think about huh?"

And then she failed him.
Another thing I have against feminists is what do you think you're doing when you say that stuff around people who want the classic fairy tale life?
A girl who wants a husband and kids, and maybe even think about staying home to help raise rightly, well mannered children. Is that a bad and poor choice that woman has made because of the oppressive patriarch? Is her cause any less noble to want that life and to have a husband and kids she can be proud of. Is it horrible for her to say, "Ya know...my life may not be perfect but I support a husband and children and have raised up a good family that I can take pride in"?
I think radical feminism has hurt "woman-kind" more than anything else. Women can be free and as sexually promiscuous as men are suppose to be...you have to be careful of the fallout.

Wives submit to their husbands, and husbands submit to Christ. There won't be any oppressive male chauvinism or control over the woman if the man is truly wedded to Christ. He will love, respect, listen to, learn from, and treat her like a princess.
You get feminism going on, you throw off that biblical principle and order. Everyone was made with a specific purpose and calling, and I am not saying that women are under the boot of man, I am saying we are all part of the same Body of Christ and need to be obedient to God and what the Word tells us to do. Because He made us, and He knows whats best about how we both work together.
And guys who don't submit to God, you're going to be messed up. You think you're going to get away with treating someone badly? or living the way you are for long? Theres honor in meekness and humility. Meekness is not weakness. There's more strength in someone who steps back when someones has insulted them. There's more strength in turning the other cheek from a punch than responding with a punch of your own. There is more strength in remaining pure and diligent before God than just going on whatever impulse strikes your fancy.
Put your pride down and your ego down and get right with God. He's the one who made you to do something specific, perhaps something amazing. No matter what it is, do it gladly, and out of that you'll be blessed.
