My Poor Jeep!
Oct 3rd, 2006 at 8:30am

I love my Jeep, but I swear, it's a magnet for stupid people.

As most of you guys know, I am the resident IT guy for a manufacturing facility.  My employer stores large plastic crates in the parking lot that are used to haul around scrap plastic and partially completed parts.

These crates are stacked 30-40 feet tall.  Apparently, a forklift driver was removing several crates from the top of the stack nearest my car and dropped two or three onto it.

He didn't see the need to inform anyone of his little mishap.  Luckily, someone else witnessed his screwup and was kind enough to snitch on him.

Here's the damage...

...

This is one of the crates that fell on my baby...

...

Scraped paint makes me sad.

...

Denty.

...

More dents.  The yellow stuff on the car is shredded plastic from the container.

...

An overview shot.

Yeah, my employer's insurance will cover it, since the damage was done by an employee using and employee vehicle.  That's a burden off my shoulders, since I won't have to fork over the deductable.

I still have to find a rental car, which is going to cost me some cash up front.  I have a feeling I'm going to have to fight to get that reimbursed, and might get screwed out of it entirely.  Last time my car was in for the battle damage caused by the drunk driver, it cost me ~$250.00 to rent a car for four days, and that car absolutely sucked.

I'm going to try to get an estimate tomorrow, I'll let you guys know how much it ends up being.  I'm guessing $1,750.  Anyone else want to take a stab?

Where are you going to take it to get fixed?

I'm not one to support many thing, esp those that reside in TR.  However, everytime I've delt with K&D Body Shop, the work, quality, and speed has been superb.  I also like them because they are local and non-chain related.

He he...hey bob you remember the chick without insurance who hit my car parked under the parking lot light after we just go out of Kill Bill Vol 2 and almost drove off...wasn't that a fun experience!  I had just been in to town for no more than 6 hrs!  TR hates me.

Come on, Pat, you have to throw out a damage estimate, too!

I'd forgotten all about the Kill Bill incident.  That was classic!  It seems like people just love to run into you and I and pretend like nothing happened.

For what it's worth, I completely agree with you about K&D.  I've taken my Jeep to them both times it needed repair (deer collision and drunk driver) and they've done superb work both times.  It's definitely going back to them this time around!

I remember that, Bob kept walking behind the police officer with his hands in his pockets.  It was cold that night but the officer was about to club Bob.

Damage cost estimate: $1924.00

DANG YOU PEOPLE AND YOUR MONTY PYTHON QUOTES!!!

Why!  Why!  Why can't we just appreciate a good movie and laugh and occationally quote it!  Why must we ALWAYS quote it!  Why must everything that comes up have some reference to MP and although we allllll know the movie we feel compelled to quote it to me!  Arhhhggg.

*Cait, this is nothin against you I do this to everyone ask Briney.  And I know this will get me retribution...but it's something I always say too*.

The grand total is... *drum roll please*

$1,833.67

That means the winner is me, but only by $7.00.  Some of you guys were way off...

$83.67 - Bob
$90.33 - Stick
$476.88 - ComputerJuvenile
$577.68 - Caitlin
$648.00 - Briney (got the cents dead on!)
$722.67 - Fatman
$983.80 - X

In case you guys are interested, the hood was $437.00, the side fender was $217.00, and the "Jeep" nameplate was $217.00.  The rest of the price consists of labor, paint, and miscellaneous fees.

I've always wondered why small things like that were so expensive.  Do they have to replace each part?  Is it hard to use a suction cup on it?  I always assumed that car repair was under the same flag as oil companies, they could just charge whatever they wanted to.

Stick, the current retail value of my Jeep is ~$6,500.  It's worth more to me since I've spent about $2,500 on it over the past two years for new tires, sound system, and extensive preventative maintenance.  Besides, I really, really like my Jeep!

X, if the metal is only dented but no "crease" has been made, it can be repaired.  However, if the metal has been pushed in far enough to crease, the part has to be replaced.  In this situation, two very expensive pieces of metal were creased, and therefore must be replaced.

I'm guessing it's a discontinued item, which puts the OEM price through the freakin' roof.

I was thinking about having them order a "Fuel Efficient" hybrid sticker to place on the back right under the V8 logo...

I really want to go to K&D since they've done such great work in the past.  I'm thinking about Wheat for my other estimate, since they tend to be a bit pricey.  Does Gearhart's do good work?

Yea, they're pretty good.  I actually go to school with the owners son.  He does a lot of custom work and such as well.  You ever see the monster truck that used to roll around town?  Its his.  Right now its being rebuilt after he flipped it end over end over end over end over end over end over end over end at Silver Lake I think it was.  In the sand dunes.  I dunno how their pricing runs though.

hahaha.  They have a 1inch drive impact socket...its attached to the ceiling because its to heavy to be able to carry around the shop.....
