I sat in on a speech given by a well known philosopher(forgot his name) and he described this theory in which there will be a MASSIVE technology explosion around the year 2025. It was called the Moore Law and it basically says that transistor numbers on processors double every year and a half or two years. All this talking about years made me think of that............

Moore's Law is going to hit a brick wall long before 2025. Moore's Law has run into the law of diminishing returns, and guess which one will win?

Do you remember when processor speeds used to double every year? That's stopped rather abruptly about four years ago, around the time the Athlon XP and Pentium IV hit the market. Intel and AMD are doing a great job of increasing efficiency per clock cycle, but that's only because the sheer quantity of clock cycles isn't increasing at the same clip it once did.

This is having a lot of far-reaching effects. IBM wasn't able to deliver their promised 3GHz PowerPC chip in 2004, and haven't reached it even today. This led to Apple kicking them to the curb and adopting the i386 platform.

Application and game developers are working harder than ever to write clean and efficient code because they can't rely on a huge number of extra processor cycles once their product hit the markets. Back in the day, they could be relatively sloppy with their coding because they didn't need to be conservative with processor usage. That no longer applies.

Even if Moore's Law would still apply in 2025 (which it won't), I still don't see the connection between that and a supposed "technology explosion." What's the correlation?

This current technology will hit a ceiling and we will be forced to discover new methods of faster calculations which will boom once this is discovered.
