Title: New Job! Post by b0b on Aug 12th, 2008 at 10:03am
Thank you so much for all of your prayers, guys! Four months after submitting my application and four weeks after my interview, I received a call early last week with a job offer. I'll be working for the Fed at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek as a systems engineer starting September 2nd!
Although I'll have a rather lengthy commute (75 minutes, sux0r!), I'm really excited about the opportunity. The VA's network is incredible, and I can't wait to jump in head first. Thanks again guys! -b0b (...will post pics as soon as possible!) |

James, that's awesome! Congratulations! The VA is one of the possible future employers I'm considering after grad school. I'm very excited for you!
As for the commute, take your favorite car-compatible media player and load it up with audio books, cool music, sermons, and the like. It can be pretty relaxing to have time to yourself like that. |

Congratulations bob! that rocks!
ugh @ the lengthy commute, tho. Yea its therapeutic and relaxing, but it is such a big chunk out of the day. :( |

Congrats!
I haven't heard anything about it yet and I already know it is a big improvement over penguin. ...And the commute could be worse, could be chicago were 75mins = 7 miles. |

I'm very happy to hear about your new job, Bob. Congratulation on that. 75 minutes would kill me. I have a 40 minute commute right now and soon I'll be moving to Portage/Kalamazoo area because that's one of the reasons (also to get out of TR and this house).
What specially will you be doing with the VA? Also, remember, if you're job is ever in jeopardy just do what the other people who hold sensitive information do....loose unsecured laptops with SSN #s, addresses, names, and bank account numbers! X |

I'll be joining the IT staff as a Systems Administrator. Essentially, I'll be doing the same thing I've done for most of my career, but on an enterprise level.
Since the IT department is rather sizable, I'll undoubtedly have a tighter focus than I've had in the past, which is a good thing. It'll give me an opportunity to focus much more closely on specific projects, instead of running around like crazy trying to fix everything that plugs into an electrical socket. I'm not looking forward to the commute, but it'll give me an excuse to buy a slightly more fuel-efficient vehicle (Mustang!). Most likely, Mere and I will move to the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek area in a couple years. Since we just bought our first house ~3 months ago, we're not in any hurry! -b0b (...Mustang FTW!) |

Whoa, if this new job is going to take away from your forum posting time then I say quit now.

I won't let that happen. I might have to go back to using a proxy, though. ;D

Just remember to always leave unsecured laptops with Vets' SSN and other sensitive information just lying around the whole country.

So I kind of have a new job as well.
At MPI, I am failing upwards! I just got elected by my bosses to take over the computer security post at MPI. If I'm not given a raise that will mean I am making even less than when I started (3rd shift = $1 more, 2nd = 50 cents, 1st = 0) so I figure if I keep this up I will be head of the company and make 25 cents a years. So please, please pray for me starting next week. It's probably a good thing that I'm buying a 42" LCD rather than a weapon because I might end up using it for nefarious reasons. The good thing is that if I utterly fail at this post they're just going to put me back on gate duty. Who knows? I want to cry. I'm going to bed. X (TAKE ME FROM THIS HELLISH WORLD CRUEL SLEEP!) |

Have you ever played Dead Rising? You can really rock somebody's world with a 42" LCD.
-b0b (...killed many a zombie with one of them.) |

X, I thought u were in law enforcement? If you work for a PD, why call it a company?

Stewie works for a medical research company, not a law enforcement agency (yet!).
Speaking of which, I had an opportunity to meet and work with the Veterans Affairs Police Department yesterday. They seem like really cool guys, and they've got some fun equipment. You should check out the job postings, Stewie. There might be something there for you, and you'd get to be a Fed! -b0b (...needs to take pictures of their van one of these days.) |
