HOLY CRAP! I've hear about people doing nothing when a crime happens...but to kill a guy with a mob of people makes me remember the days of old where lynching was the hip thing to do. |

HOLY CRAP! This is why officers need to not rely on tasers unless it's absolutely necessary. I know officers who use them when a suspect just won't comply with what they are saying. Instead of taking th energy to wrestle with them in a lesser method of submission they use their tasers. I've read stories from these things causing death to being used on pregnant ladies, people in wheel chairs, 9 y/o's, and the mentally disabled. However...to burst into flames!!?? Woooooowwww. X |
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by spanky on Jun 20th, 2007 at 1:19pm
1. It's good that the mob showed the guy that it is wrong to hurt another human being...
2. I think YOU rely too much on wrestling with other guys, I mean all I did was say hey pat and you were trying to wrestle me to the ground... |
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by X on Jun 20th, 2007 at 1:39pm Quote:
However, in my defense, you did have those gold sparkling short shorts on and turned your back side to me and said "It feels like I'm wearing nothing at all...nothing at all...nothing at all..." X |
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by b0b on Jun 20th, 2007 at 1:44pm
1) Wrestling with a suspect when you've got a gun on your hip is retarded. If you want to play WWF with the bad guys, make sure you hand someone your handgun before you lube up and jump into the ring.
2) How many news threads are we going to have?! -b0b (...thinks 6 will suffice.) |

I figure a few more threads will be ok...I'm kinda sick of always looking at the 4 main ones...so this is good.

Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by b0b on Jun 21st, 2007 at 1:41pm
I think the worst aspect of the rise of the Interweb is the universal assault on grammar that is taking place. Language is always a growing, evolving beast, but the laissez-faire attitude our generation applies to grammatical conventions is absolutely ridiculous.
I've recently begun taking a handful of college classes online to complete my bachelor's degree and potentially prepare for a graduate program. I'm appalled at the poor grammar some of my fellow classmates use when communicating in the classroom or on discussion threads. I don't understand how some of these students think slang or shorthand is even remotely appropriate in any classroom environment, let alone a college classroom. -b0b (...gets off his grammar Nazi box.) |
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by X on Jun 21st, 2007 at 2:29pm
I agree completely. When I was taking my upper level criminal justice classes I would check out a few people's papers on what they wrote. I don't know how my profs could even read some of the poorly written papers the students "wrote". They would read mine and always complain that I got good grades on them. I wanted to tell them my profs probably just gave me good grades because I could coherently put words together to make sentences.
These are future police officers, lawyers, judges, and government representatives we're talking about. And we all know when I tackle a perp. in my field it's going to help by me saying "ooo newb u just got 0nzzzed!!!!!!!!!!!1111" X |

How is Amtrack still in business. This is the second time this month where they've kicked a person off and overreacted. The other time was kicking off a man who, I believe, went into diabetic shocked and they left him in the woods. Why are people suing this old transport left and right?! If Sliders taught me anything, like I'm sure the kid who tried to return the I-Pod, is that you never pick up a wallet on the street where other people are avoiding it....they might put you on trial TV and try and execute you....or Amtrack will throw you and your brother off the train in the middle of nowhere and tell em to fend for themselves. Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by b0b on Jul 25th, 2007 at 4:52pm Quote:
The article specifically stated that the passengers were released into the custody of the police department. That hardly constitutes "the middle of nowhere" or "fending for themselves." The article certainly makes it seem as though Amtrak overreacted, but I am fairly confident there was a lot more to the story than what was included. For what its worth, Amtrak is a private corporation and has every right to remove unruly passengers at their discretion. If your children can't stay seated and obey the rules, they shouldn't be traveling by themselves. -b0b (...disagrees on this one.) |

This is what happens when you hire these types of people. The people keep asking how he passed the background check. Trust me, it's was harder for me to pass than these types of people.
For example: When I smiled because the background investigator looked and saw that I didn't get into too much trouble, pretty much none at all. She said it was a bit of a disadvantage because it made me kinda naive. When I was doing my interview with the hostile panel they asked if I ever got into a fight before. When I told them nothing serious like where I was punching back or not rough housing they told me they "didn't know if I would be good" because they do get into a lot of scuffs with people. There were many things I find odd with how departments hire police. Just look at how long it's taken me to get to this final stage in one job. I have a four year degree with a good GPA, I've never got arrested or got into trouble, I've never done drugs or been violent. All these things you would think you want in a cop. However the requirements are at least a high school diploma, a little trouble seems to be ok, and it's ok if you done drugs before as long as you tell us and you stop it. People wonder why cops break out like this...maybe it's the paramilitary training we give them when they first start out. I've always said that the military is there to hunt and kill the enemy, the police are there to protect and serve the people. When you tell the cops that the people are "citizens" and train them using military tactics I'm not too surprised with what I see cops doing. X |

I call bull. Most cops don't get any "paramilitary training" to speak of, and what little of it I've seen as a casual observer is restricted to SWAT/SRT teams and their ilk. Even if that officer had militaryesque training, I have no clue how that would cause a person to go on a homicidal rampage. You could probably find a stronger correlation between violent video games and homicide (which we know is crap) than cop training and homicide. I know plenty of non-cops that have gone through paramilitary training (Thunder Ranch, Front Sight, Gunsite, etc.) and so far, none of them have snapped and killed anybody. I guarantee you that Thunder Ranch is far more hardcore than 99% of SWAT training programs. -b0b (...calls BS.) |

I'm not saying that's what cops are I'm saying what they should be there for and what they were set up to do. I would actually put your number at 70% maybe even 60% and I would also say there are a lot of people who get taken into the power trip with the "Us Vs. Them" mentality. If police depts would try and find some way to measure how much empathy a person has and get those people to become cops...I would think you'd have better police officers.

Boy's 911 Call Leads To Mother's Arrest POSTED: 11:24 am PDT October 22, 2007 UPDATED: 12:13 pm PDT October 22, 2007 VANCOUVER, Wash. -- An 8-year-old boy called 911 about his mother's driving Saturday night, leading Clark County deputies to arrest her. "I don't know where we are and mom's not acting normal," the boy told a 911 dispatcher. The dispatcher asked the boy to point out businesses or landmarks that he saw. With information from the boy and call-tracking technology, deputies found the car and arrested 33-year-old Paulette Lynn Spears. Spears, of Vancouver, faces charges of drunken driving, reckless endangerment and assault of a child. She is accused of biting the boy's hand while trying to get the phone away from him. The boy and a 5-year-old who was also in the car were placed with an aunt. Spears is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon. Now, Really. Do they have to change Britney's first name to Paulette? We already know she's an incompetent mother. Caitlin (has been reading too much of Perez Hilton's blog lately) |

So you have been waiting all this time on a graphics card that will give you realistic water? The water in games now looks real enough for me. I will be impressed when a graphics card is so realistic it creates water and throws it in your face.(or for somepeople gives them real bedsores from camping one spot for too long...) ...now THAT'S the future of gaming. |
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by b0b on Nov 30th, 2007 at 12:40pm
Check out the water comparisons in the screenshots at the bottom of this page:
http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTQxMyw0LCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA== Actually, that entire article is pretty decent. It not only discusses the image quality improvements in DirectX 10 (in LOTR: Online anyway) but the massively negative impact DX10 has on system performance. DX10 has the same effect on computers that I have on Spanky's mom, it brings them to their knees! ZING! DX9 can create some pretty impressive water, but DX10 can really help integrate water with land, leading to a much more satisfying result. I've attached a screenshot showing DX10 on the left and DX9 on the right. If you could take the crazy transparencies in the DX10 screenshot and combine it with some decent Havok physics for liquids, you'd have a pretty darned cool toy! -b0b (...BAM!) |
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by spanky on Nov 30th, 2007 at 1:53pm
You sure both screenshots have all of the settings turned on? That water looks a lot like the water in quake wars...when I have the option turned on.
Still, buy a 9000 series card just for pretty water? What are you, an art major? ...dang |
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by b0b on Nov 30th, 2007 at 3:03pm
DX10 is a lot more than pretty water. It includes better hooks for physics, more realistic smoke effects, much improved shadowing (also covered at the link I posted earlier), and vastly superior particle effects and interaction. I've attached a screenshot of the DX10 particle effects when compared to DX9. The difference is pretty amazing.
DirectX 10 will also bring some pretty interesting improvements to the sound arena once the major sound vendors get used to the OpenAL API. Perhaps one of my biggest grips with Vista is the elimination of most aspects of DirectSound, leaving lots of old (and new) games sounding like crap with stereo sound. Creative Labs seems to be making some strides in repairing that damage with ALchemy, but the verdict is still out on whether or not ALchemy is going to do the trick. For what its worth, I'm not just a DX10 fanboy. The last couple revisions of DirectX haven't really been all that breathtaking, but DX10 really has the potential to take gaming to the next level. Not only will games look better than ever, but the improvements in sound and physics will make games far more immersive. Imagine Half-Life 2's physics kicked up a notch! I had more fun with the gravity gun than I did with the rest of the game combined, and I can't wait to see more innovation on that front. I don't get to play games nearly as often as I would like to, but I really appreciate beautiful games. If I'm playing a game that is truly engrossing and worthwhile, I want to play it with all of the settings cranked so I can view it the same way the creators did. A person stricken with cataracts can't appreciate a Degas painting the same way a person with 20/20 vision can because they can't see it the same way the artist does. Briney, what's your take on this? On an off-topic note, just last night I started playing Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, and I can honestly say that it's one of the most beautiful and engaging games I've played since Riven. Although its beauty is tied more to the artistic direction taken by the producers than the API its running on, I can only imagine what this game would look like if it was redone in DX10. If you guys are looking for something completely off the path, this game is truly amazing. -b0b (...was all over the place in this post.) |

Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by b0b on Nov 30th, 2007 at 3:22pm
That last screenshot was from BioShock, by the way. Here's another example of DX10 pwnage from Call of Heroes. For what its worth, Call of Heroes was originally a DX9.0c title. Even though the game is over a year old, it just received a DX10 update via patch a couple months ago.
As you can see from the screenshot, the DX10 version has much more believable shadowing. The grass is also incredible by comparison! -b0b (...attaches it.) |
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by spanky on Nov 30th, 2007 at 3:28pm
Fine, you made your freaking point. DX10 is semi cool. Still, you going to vista to use it?
|
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by b0b on Nov 30th, 2007 at 3:28pm
Just because I'm bored, here's one more shot from Call of Heroes showing the difference in shadowing between DX9 and DX10. If you look closely at the characters, you'll see they have two shadows in the DX10 version, one cast by the lamp and one cast by the moon.
Although the effect is very subtle in this particular screenshot, it gives an idea of just what DX10 can do. Imagine the lighting on a tree. Instead of the artists forcing a shadow to be created from one light source, the engine can dynamically create shadows for every single leaf from a near-infinite number of sources. Moreover, it can layer those shadows dynamically over the top of bump-mapped textures, lending an incredible amount of realism on different types of surfaces. In short, I want it. -b0b (...still thinks DX10 being Vista-only is a scam, though.) |

No, I'm going to Vista because I need to learn Vista for the 2008 MCSE certifications. Although most of the stuff changed between XP and Vista isn't the kind of stuff that's going to show up on an exam, I still need to familiarize myself with the new Group Policy management options and the network configuration changes. The best way to do that is to actually use Vista. That said, DirectX 10 is a great perk in the upgrade process. I was on Windows 95 for three years, 98 for one year, 98SE for two years, and 2000 for 1 year. It's been six years since I made the jump from 2000 to XP, which is by far the longest I've ever spent on a single platform. I'm ready to make the leap. However, this is only the second time I've ever been hesitant about migrating to a new platform. Millenium was the other, and I completely skipped that version and opted for 2000 Pro instead. Hopefully my OS spidey sense will be wrong this time around. -b0b (...shrugs.) |

Yeah, I guess that's sensible.
I've been planning on buying a summer CCW piece for the last year now and still haven't made the leap. I'm looking at one of these bad boys... Kahr PM4043A. I want the version with the Tritium night sights (radiation, FTW!), but I can't seem to find $814 in my change jar... If you guys are looking for a small, cheap, and easily concealable pistol, you might want to consider a Kel-Tec 9mm. There are several different options, but the P9 and P11 are the most popular. You can get them in a variety of colors (black, two-tone black/stainless, gray, etc.) and calibers (.40S&W, 9mm, .32ACP, .380) and several different sight/light options. These pistols retail in the $200-$300 range depending on which options you choose. You can typically buy them from a distributor at a gun show for as low as $175. -b0b (...thinks the Geek Crew needs to go to a gun show soon.) |
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by spanky on Jan 9th, 2008 at 8:33am
I would be more willing to get my CCW if I lived in a place like detroit (murder capital of the US, woot!) or sturgis. Down here the only shady places I go are some of the factories. Who the hell puts a machine casting plant in the middle of the ghetto?!

Well time warner is going to start charging for internet access in one town by how much you download. This is great I love paying more for less service! And why do they need to do this? Because, according to them, many people are downloading multiple terabytes of data from p2p each month. Now b0b is probably the biggest bandwidth whore here so I will direct this question at him. How many terabytes do you download in 1 month? Also to get you to stop downloading that much they are going to cap your usage at 30 gigabytes. Anyone notice that there is a huge gap between 30GB and 2-3TB? Why can't these companies get a person who knows what they are talking about to make public statments? Proofed. |
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by b0b on Jan 18th, 2008 at 1:42pm
If they're going to cap downloading at 30GB, how are they going to charge people that are downloading terabytes worth of data?
For what it's worth, my biggest single download session was probably no more than 45GB in a week. Even if I did that four weeks in a row, that's only about ~200GB in a one month period once you factor in web stuff and the forum traffic. If somebody is hitting 2-3 terabytes, they're hosting something big, and I have no problem with an ISP selectively notifying those users to cut it out. They need to be on a dedicated hosting package (probably a frickin' T3 with that much data), not a cable line. -b0b (...thinks bandwidth caps are BS.) |

Brazil isn't China, so they won't really enforce it. They'll make the retailers stop carrying copies of EverCrack, but that won't stop people from downloading the client over the Interweb and buying a working account on Ebay.

Well, not sure if you know this, but I was bitten by our dog two times when I was a little over 1 year old. (so I am told, I only have a very small scar) The first time he bit my hand and didn't really do anything bad. The next time his tooth went into my eyebrow almost hitting my eyeball.
I think dogs are great; and I will have one when I decide to get a house. But once a dog starts biting kids they do keep doing it. After the second time my dad did take the dog out to the forest and shoot it. Not to sound too much like a filthy hippy but I was poking and pulling on the dog and I can see why he did that and I think killing him was a little extreme. In the end I think it is time to get rid of it to a family without kids. But the real question here is why the hell does bob hate pets so much??(I can see hating cats, but dogs...come on) |

Ya know if it wasn't for all the killing that occurs when people speak out against Muslims...Islam would be on par with Scientology and be considered just another cult. This is what happens when you follow a guy who said...we worship the same god as the Jews...so let's kill those Jews and anyone else who won't believe in our god! I really wish Muslims would take a good look at the history of Allah and notice that he was nothing more than an old pagan god who Mohammad worshiped at Mecca. It wasn't a new concept...the only thing new was that Allah went from one of thousands to just one. What is this?! You are typing with white text?! Allah commands nothing about this...soooooo....we cut off your hands! Ya know, I always thought the point of any religion was to draw closer to the deity. Granted, I believe that God is the only true God...but I'll give up for the sake of argument that the God I worship is somewhat like all the others (but I don't really). I'd say this guy was a wannabe spy. Most Spook's don't act like a spy and they don't go around hiding most of their life from loved ones. They might tell their gf cover stories but they would never just go with "don't ask, don't tell" policy in relationships. If you give a half true story, the person doesn't ask again. However, hiding your life only makes people more curious.
Not to mention if this guy was a fed, there'd be no reason to act like he did to the cops. All he'd have to do is flash a badge and he's on his way again. X |

Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by b0b on May 1st, 2008 at 9:29pm
I think he moved out of the real espionage stuff a long time ago and worked on the political/administrative side of intelligence. His bragging might have been a bit unprofessional, but he was a political-type at a private intelligence company, not a deep-cover agent for the CIA.
It sounds to me like he got pushed out of his own private intelligence business a couple months back and went off the deep end. Or maybe he was just drunk out of his mind... Who knows? -b0b (...finds it to be an intriguing story, either way!) |

Homeschooling shouldn't be banned. But it should be regulated a little. We have a guy here at work that was homeschooled. His views of the world are special at best. He is probably the biggest reason I will send my kids to public school.

If this article wasn't so damned sad, this statement would be hilarious. Who is going to be concerned about a child's "ongoing safety" than their parents? Especially parents that are concerned enough about their children's education to homeschool them? Quote:
First, let me just say that government interference (regulation) is bad, mmkay? But enough about that. Having attended the same church for much of my life, I've had the opportunity to observe a lot of homeschooled kids as they grew up. Some of them are good friends of mine. Admittedly, most of them have gone through an "awkward" social stage in their early teens as the adjusted to a society that was somewhat foreign to them, but the majority of them have grown into perfectly normal, well-adjusted adults. There are some homeschoolers that I've met that seemingly never fully adjusted to society, but I think that has far more to do with their incredibly strict upbringing than their homeschooling. Let's face it, we're social creatures and we're very adept at adapting to our surroundings. Once homeschoolers start integrating with society (which is generally when they hit "dating age"), much of the social awkwardness evaporates practically overnight. Anyway, regardless of the social graces of homeschoolers, every one of them that I'm familar with has been has grown into a successful adult and is on par with their public school peers in terms of intellect and social wellbeing. For the government to say that homeschool is unlawful is pure BS, period. -b0b (...steps off his soap box.) |

|
Title: Re: HOLY CRAP! News Stories Post by b0b on Sep 29th, 2008 at 9:24pm
I'm elated that it failed. Sure, it will be tough for awhile, but that bailout was socialism at its finest.
The very most basic tenet of capitalism is that every man has the right to "hang out their shingle," but that they alone are responsible for the success or failure of their business. Asking the government to free banks of their business obligations is completely unacceptable. The financial industry made a greedy gamble when it offered loans to individuals that had absolutely no business obtaining a mortgage, and they lost. If those companies made too big a bet on that sector of the market, they deserve to go out of business - even if the rest of the market suffers because of it. I'm a strong proponent of the "laissez faire" economic doctrine, and I won't sell out my principles just so my own investments are spared a turbulent ride. America simply can't afford to take on a trillion dollars in debt. It's unaffordable, and its un-American. -b0b (...thinks the Glass-Seagall Act needs to be reinstated right-freakin'-now.) |
