Post by b0b on Oct 11th, 2006 at 2:58pm
Vague reports are surfacing about a plane hitting a skyrise in downtown Manhattan.  Rush is reporting it as a small plane.  Developing...

Fox says it might have been a helicopter.  Heavy smoke and fire pouring from the building.

The building is located at the intersection of 72nd Street and York Avenue on the east side of Manhattan.  The websites for CNN and Fox News only have a "breaking news" banner but no story or pictures, nothing at all on Google News.

Picture attached at the bottom of this post.  The crash happened only minutes ago, but already the .gov has reported that "this isn't a terrorist attack."  Five minutes into the event and already the government know what it isn't.  Whatever.

Here's something pointed out by a user on another forum:

maybe the building will collapse due to the extended heat from the fire.

I hope noone was in that room at the time, and maybe, hopefully the pilot somehow bailed or lived.

LOL good point Briney.

We need to evacuated all high rises and not allow any aircraft to fly.  Who knows when a fire could start and suddenly collapse a steel structure!

NBC is saying the FAA has confirmed that it was a fixed-wing aircraft flying, not a helicopter.  They're also reporting that the aircraft was not in contact with air traffic control, so it hadn't reported any health/equipment problems.

The plane was flying using Visual Flight Rules (in other words, not using instruments) and was flying well below proper altitude for VFR flight.

Luggage has been found on the street as well.

It was just reported that:

1. Penetration of Aircraft into building was "not significant."
2. Firefighters described operation as a "routine" one.
3. Firefighters have substantially extinguished flames in building.
4. No significant injuries to any FDNY personnel.
5. Structure integrity of building is believed to be "excellent."

I heard:

1.  2 people dead
2.  the plane was a $500,000 small plane.  Top of the line
3.  the reporters on the news said that initial reports from the police usually turn out to be false.  :P

NEW YORK (AP) - A small plane with New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle aboard crashed into a high-rise condominium tower Wednesday on the Upper East Side, killing at least four people and raining flaming debris on the sidewalks below, authorities said.

There was no immediate confirmation Lidle was among the dead, although a federal law enforcement official said Lidle's passport was found on the street beneath the crash site.

A law enforcement official in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Lidle was on the plane. And Federal Aviation Administration records showed the single-engine plane was registered to the athlete.

The four deaths were confirmed by Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office. There was no word yet on injuries linked to the crash on an overcast October afternoon, which sent thick black smoke soaring above the city skyline and flames shooting out of apartments above the tony neighborhood.

On Sunday, the day after the Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs, Lidle cleaned out his locker at Yankee Stadium and talked about his interest in flying. He explained to reporters the process of getting a pilot's license, and said he intended to fly back to California in several days and planned to make a few stops.

Lidle, 34, a nine-year major league veteran, came to the Yankees from the Philadelphia Phillies in a late-season trade. The journeyman pitched for seven teams during a career in compiling an 82-78 lifetime record.
