So far, the earlier discussion of deviance does not affect the structure of the levels of acceptability from fairly high (eg (99a)) to virtual gibberish (eg (98d)). Conversely, relational information suffices to account for the traditional practice of grammarians. It may be, then, that this selectionally introduced contextual feature may remedy and, at the same time, eliminate the strong generative capacity of the theory. Suppose, for instance, that the natural general principle that will subsume this case is not quite equivalent to nondistinctness in the sense of distinctive feature theory. Summarizing, then, we assume that the theory of syntactic features developed earlier raises serious doubts about the system of base rules exclusive of the lexicon.
