While attempting to clone a laptop hard drive onto a Samsung 840 120GB SSD with the Samsung Data Migration Tool (v1.2), I received the following error:
An error occurred while defragmenting the disk.
This vague and completely incorrect error message took awhile to decipher. Ultimately, it had nothing to do with deframentation. I was cloning a ~150GB HDD (~50GB used) onto a ~120GB SSD. For some reason, the Data Migration Utility was choking on the conversion. I was able to fix this by entering Disk Management in Windows (DiskMgmt.msc) and shrinking the source drive to 80GB. As long as the source HDD volume is smaller than the target SSD volume, this problem will not occur.
